Back when Ed Caffrey (a Mastersmith with the American Bladesmith Society and fellow forumite) first started making the EBK model, I accidentally ordered a "dressed up" version. I say "accidentally" because Ed doesn't take custom orders on this model. Instead, he makes small batches of the "Economical Belt Knife" to make available for customers on a no-wait basis from time to time. Well Ed, the kind and flexible gentleman that he is, was kind enough to make an exception for me. The knife, much to my delight, arrived this past Monday.
Most EBKs are made from 1084 with G-10 scales. This piece, however, is a little fancier. Call it a dressed up version if you will.
The damascus is forged from 15-N-20 and 1084 in a random pattern. The handle scales are a crosscut maple burl. At first, Ed put on redwood scales but thought it looked ugly, so he tore them off and replaced them with something nicer - he's such a perfectionist! The knife is 6 3/8" overall with a 2 3/4" blade that's approximately 1/8" thick.
Oh - what does VHHPYEDBK stand for, you ask? Why, "Very Handsome High Performance, Yet Economical Damascus Belt Knife," of course.
