That long straight underside to the ricasso gives a nice platform to support your forefinger when choking up. Leaving it straight in-line with the edge (no choil) also lets the blade slide all the way in to the hilt and glide back out without snagging. A superior design feature of Ed's blades in my view, and one I look for on my own knives. On this camp knife the ricasso does appear even longer than usual, possibly for an extra margin of safety while performing camp chores that require extended use of the choked hold.
