EDC-4 vs 4.1

I recently bought an S!K EDC-4. My original thought was it would be cool to have one of the first S! Knives. But after getting it I realized that I really like the grips/scales. The EDC-4 has more of a palm swell than the 4.1 and even though the grip length of the EDC-4 is slightly short than the 4.1 the countering gives the EDC-4 a better feel. I think the EDC-4 would be uncomfortable for people with bigger hands but it fits mine like a glove.

So this begs the question, of those that have an EDC-4 and a 4.1 do you have a preference?

Ellie/Guy got any feedback?

You are lucky. I want all the S! Blades but I seen the black scout survival video where he discussed the edc 4 and its been something I looked for and haven't found for sale. I bet if you bought a lotto ticket the same day you got that you'd be a billionaire right now. Lol.

Yes I was! It's a cool little knife, not that much different than the 4.1.

I finally figured out how to post pics.....just call me the rocket surgeon...

Interesting differences between the EDC 4 and 4.1. I like the scales a little better on the EDC 4 than on the 4.1 in the above pics, which is an early 4.1 - though not numbered. The old scales have a little more contouring and are a bit tackier. I have an old 5, again not numbered but another early one, and I checked the scales and noticed they are also tackier than the new scales. Not much to make a difference. The great thing about these scales is that you can remove them. I just scrub mine with a nylon brush, warm water and soap and they just get better as they age.

I sent the EDC 4 back to Guy to get it resharpened. I can't wait to get it back. I'll post all 3 generations either here or in a new thread when I get my new 4.1.

I don't have an EDC-4 but I love my 4.1's I am curious how the new ones turn out, but this was one model that I enjoy so much already I wasn't worried about buying a new one of (that may not stop me). I know for people with larger hands it might not be perfect, but that's what the 5 is for!!

I'd love to give an original edc-4 a whirl too, A side by side of an edc-4/4.1/new spec 4.1 would be really interesting

The EDC-4 is my choice between the two because of the wider handle and the spear point. That new 4.7 should be phenomenal.

Let us know what you think of the new spec handles. They will all have more swell.

I'll take pictures of all 3 knives and will be happy to let you know what I think. But I am sure they'll be excellet. I can't wait to get 'em!!

What steel options were available on the EDC 4? I have one that is supposed to be Elmax but it's not marked on the blade as it is on the newer 4.1s.

Mine is 3v but I think elmax might have been an option. I know S! made some in elmax. Give Guy or Ellie a ring they might be able to tell you what it is.

They made Elmax versions. I'm guessing yours only has the the Survive logo and a USA on the pommel.

Yes, that's how it is: only the Survive logo on one side of the blade (no steel designation) and the USA on the pommel. As shown in the photos from OBX351, the handles of my 4 and 4.1 have different contours. The 4 is better in hand and, I imagine, its scales are more like what the newer Starter-style handles will be like. The 4.1 sheath, however, is way better.

Knifewing, i asked the same question today on the facebook site and Guy answered your question. If it is elmax, there will be a small hole by the middle handle screw hole under the scales.

If you check under the handles there will be a small indicator hole if it is Elmax. It would be near the middle bolt hole. The CPM-3V does not have any indicator holes.

Thanks for the info. I will remove the scales and check. And thanks, too, Psybull--dinosaur that I am, I'm not on Facebook.

If you get a chance you should check out the facebook group, it is slowly growing and shows some pretty good pictures.
I was lucky enough to pick up a few of the edc4's last week and they all turned out to be elmax.
