EDC and airplane travel

Hello:

I like the idea of carrying a personal survival kit, including a knife, either on my person or in my briefcase. However, I travel on airplanes for business frequently and don't want to risk forgetting to remove a blade from my kit. I also usually travel with carry on luggage only, so I can't check my kit.

Does anybody else face this issue? Any creative ways to handle?

Best,
Michael

We all face this issue. There are no creative ways to evade it. We have been taken over by morons.

If checked baggage is a problem, you cannot bring a knife of any sort with you. If you are going someplace where you can mail yourself a knife and mail it home again, do that. Carry a pre-stamped and pre-addressed envelope or small Priority Mail box with you. Or buy a new SAK or other utility knife when you get there, and mail it home or give it to someone before you leave.

We are being nibbled to death by ducks.

I know lanskey used to make (they might still, but i don't know) a small, about 6 inch total length, fixed blade multi, purpose knife, that was made out of some synthetic super hard 'plastic' like material. It wasn't very expencive, and could easily get through a metal detector. you should look in to it. If you think it's worth the risk, that is.

Pen knives frequently make it through airport security tucked away in wallets.

Yes, that would be really smart to be caught with a plastic blade. Think about it: an otherwise useless blade that looks like a weapon to the people searching you.

Hmmmm

If you think you can't survive without a knife, I would look into bringing some luggage that can be checked in.

Then I would suggest that you check in a bag, if you can not live without a knife. There is no other legal way.

There are a multitude of plastic knives and plastic impact weapons, all of which are highly illegal in secure areas of airports. You will get into more trouble with one of them than with an ordinary knife.

Cold Steel just came out with an expanded line of their plastic knives. Not a great idea, unless you are a card-carrying secret agent. :)

During the flight you don't need a knife. If your airplane crashes, you will probably die anyway. Air accidents are usually happen during take-off and landing, so if you survive, you are still in a civilized area, so your last problem is the need for any kind of knife.

I'm a knifeknut too, so I totally understand you. I feel naked without my EDC, but come on, I'm also a smoker, so I miss my pack of smokes more during a long flight. Just put up with it; you only can take your knife to an airplane in your checked luggage. I wouldn't try to sneak any bladed toll aboard. It just doesn't worth the risk. If you don't have a chacked luggage, do as Esav Benyamin said; mail the knife to your destination ad back, or buy a new one when you arrive.

Buy something nice but affordable over the net before you leave, have it delivered to your hotel. It's faster, cheaper and easier than having to look around for a knife shop at a city you don't know.

I did this a couple of times, works like a charm. You can also just mail your EDC to the hotel in advance, but I think that the previous idea is better, since you get to buy a new toy.

Of course, this only matters if you're going to some other place in your own country. If I were flying to Mexico or Europe, for example, I would want to stop by a local knife shop and buy something distinctive for that area.

I think the real problem is a government policy that says we are no longer responsible for our own safety or convenience. We are reduced to shuffling along like children or prisoners. Perhaps when we get where we are going, we will be "allowed" to provide for our own needs, let alone our wants.

Do we need a knife on a plane? Maybe. My Victorinox Classic gets used regularly to trim and file fingernails. The pen blade opens small cellophane packages.

Why are we araid of our own citizens?

I always have to hide my blade in checked luggage, inside a rolled pair of socks...I would not risk carrying even a non-mettalic blade onto a plane...

I've never understood why you shouldn't be able to hand in a Swiss Army or pen knife when boarding, and have it returned to you at the end of the flight.

But then I don't see either why we should propagate the possibilities of smuggling ceramic knives etc. on board of an airplane. We know what such possibilities have made possible in the past.

Well, scissors up to 4" long are allowed now. If you break down a scissor that is kind of like a knife. So if you are desperate enough to have something that you'll bring along a plastic knife, just take some scissors that you can break down. Plus, they would probably be better in the very unlikely event that you need to cut yourself out of your seat belt. Plus, they would be handy on those annoying packs of peanuts.

I recently flew to Bucharest, Romania on business. Was a very short trip, departed on Friday and came home Sunday afternoon. I could have EASILY done it with only carry-on baggage as I just wore jeans, sweater and leather jacket the whole time I was there. However, I wasn't about to go knifeless, so I stowed my underwear, socks, t-shirts, shaving kit and Endura and Leatherman Micra into a small bag and checked it. I felt rather silly checking such a small bag (my laptop computer, which I carried on, was bulkier and heavier!), but like I said, I wasn't about to go knifeless. For the record, I didn't use either the knife or mini multi tool during the entire weekend. Would've felt wrong not having them, though.

We've been placed in a giant tank full of soft-crabs, and are being lightly patted to death.

What happened to constitutional rights, individual freedom, limited governmental control, and the right to bear arms? Weren't those ideals originally the foundation of the republican party?
Whatever. They won't let me in to the White House to chat with 'em, so all I can do (aside from the obvious... voting...) is...
Check a bag if I want to have my pocketknife after a flight.

And you think that actually think that still works? Florida, 2000... Ohio 2004... as Stalin said, "It's not who votes that counts. It's who counts the votes." :jerkit:

Good way to justify a new toy...er...neccessity to your wife.
