This is my first post on this forum and maybe a bit long, but bear with me. I have always enjoyed a nice knife and have carried a BM 690 for the past 4 years as a do everything knife. Recently I went to Sportsmans Warehouse for a flashlight and unfortunately saw their 15% off sale on all knives (it was posted above the urinal) and I was bitten. I stopped by the knife cases and ended up buying a BM 940 S30V so I could still carry a knife and send in my 690 for a cleaning/tuneup. I knew nothing about this knife except it looked good and felt good to me. When I got home I found this forum and read the reviews and opinions on it and was very happy with my purchase. While reading the forums I liked what I read about the BM 710 and went right back and purchased it and it is a fine knife, unfortunately in Colorado I can only carry under 3.5 inches so I went back and also purchased a BM 707. Now I have read that some members like to carry a do everything knife and a second knife dedicated to self defense. In your opinion should the 707 be my every use knife and the 940 self defense or vice versa?

Welcome back to the party! I don't favor a knife for self defense but if it was a last ditch emergency I believe I'd grab my Benchmade 9100 Auto Striker (assuming I couldn't find my Remington, Winchester, Browning, Colt, Beretta, etc. or the dragon lady didn't get 'em first with one of her big kitchen knives (no Bobbitt jokes) or the aluminum baseball bat she keeps in the closet, and assuming they got past the dog first).

Welcome to the forum.

I also just bought a 940 in S30V. I should have it in a couple days. I have held/used the 940's in 154CM and they are just a great knife. For self defense I would say first that you should never use one for self defense unless absolutely neccessary. I don't carry one for self defense but I would use the 940 or 707 or whatever I had at the time if needed. I'm talking life and death, not just some punks mugging me for my wallet and watch. I'd just give 'em my money and watch if needed without even pulling a knife. Reason being is that I'm likely to get it used on me if I don't now what I'm doing.

I think that unless you've gone to or are going to go to some martial arts classes for knife defense I wouldn't use it for SD at all.

You bought some great knives. I like the 707 and 940 a lot. Much more than I thought I would. Benchmade does a nice job with their aluminum handles. Heck they do a nice job on everything.

The 710 is too large for me but from what I've read it's a great knife.

Enjoy yourself and your knives. Don't take things to seriously and you'll be fine. :)

yeah that 15% off sales had me real tempted, plus they always put a $10 off coupon in the sports page each week here. you got youself some great knives there

I'd say you did real well with those three purchase's. I have personally always preferred to carry at least two knives. One is usally a big folder that I carry alone in my right front pocket, while I carry a small multi-blade slipjoint in my left front pocket. I rarely ever use the large knife but derive much enjoyment simply by being able to carry a knife that most folks I run into will never ever see, much less carry. That little slipjoint gets the majority of my work done in a very efficient manner, and if someone ask to borrow a knife, well.................:) . I'm carrying a medium Case stockman and a BM 610 Rukus, and have been for the past month.

Thanks guys!! The self defense question was sort of a gee whiz question. I have carried some sort of knife most of my life and never even came close to using one. I think I was just looking for an excuse to carry more than one to play with. Thanks again for your replies.

Great purchases. I really like the axis lock knives and the 710 is a supreme EDC IMO.

As for self-defense, as I consider a knife as a last ditch alternative, the knife you are most familiar with and have on hand will do (it will have to, as such an incident isn't planned anyway, just prepared for).

Carrying two knives is fairly common. One longer, one shorter. If you dull one, you got a sharp standby, some tasks are better performed with a shorter length blade, etc.

Oh,

Welcome aboard
