Tony G was kind enough to lend me a Leaner and an Active Duty to check out. So I took some pics comparing them to a Black Tie Game Warden and a Dozier K-1 I scored recently off eBay. This model Dozier is a sort of general purpose utility blade.
Handles. Order is reveresed from above.
Spine shot.
I also took some measurements. All the Busse knives had a fairly blocky handle, while the K-1 was more barrell shaped, top to bottom, and lenghtwise.
Spine thickness was measured just in front of the scales, at the top of the ricasso. I measurd the thickness of the blade at the top of the edge bevel, and the width of that bevel. Then I took the thickness at 0.44" back from the edge, and used that to calculate the (included) angle of the primary grind. The Dozier is hollow ground, has the thinnest edge, and would make a better slicer.
Handle Spine Behind Edge bevel Width of Edge Bevel "@ 0.44" behind edge Angle of Primary Bevel
Leaner L 0.6 0.143 0.034 0.05 0.095 12.3
AD LE 0.6 0.152 0.024 0.05 0.1 13
Dozier K-1 .63 - .50 0.143 0.022 0.035 0.05 6.5
GW 0.63 0.141 0.025 0.034 0.074 10
But none of these will be mistaken for a good kitchen utility knife. My $20 Dale Warther Utility model is only 0.10" thick, and a Kasumi 5" utility knife is only 0.01" thick at the edge bevel. Those are slicers, but not stout enough for field work.
I would still like to see an Anorexic Warden, with the same full flat grind. And while you're at it, Jerry, how about and extra 1/2 inch in length, so the knife is not all belly?
Thanks to Tony for the use of a few of his toys!
