EDC - concealibility vs ease of reach...opinions?

Gentlemen,

I ran into a catch 22 - if I EDC my Umnumzaam clipped to my pants pocket, the clip gives away the knife; if I let the knife loose in my pocket, it travels it and it's not in the best position to be reached.
Any ideas? I initially thought about a lanyard but it's still a clue and stops me from change grip quickly.

Thanks

spring loaded delivery device in the sleeve.

why do you need to hide it? if you are carrying a knife illegally you probably shouldn't be carrying a knife.

Spring loaded device...liked it!

Seriously, I'm not carrying illegally - I live in Arizona and around here if you can lift it, you can carry it; my point (and thanks for giving me the occasion to clarify it) is that if you EDC a knife for self defense, the clip will give away that you have a knife making it less effective. Am I wrong?

Regards

Not for the Umnumzaam but neck carry is very quick and concealed. Most people don't even assume a ball chain around the neck has a knife hanging at the end of it. I can grab both ends of the chain, pull the knife up out of my shirt, then jerk down and have it in my hand as quick as any pocket or belt knife.

Maybe the attacker will fixate on the clip long enough for you to pull out your J-Frame .357 ;)

Well if you are in Arizona, why not use a firearm for self defense? Have you thought about carrying IWB? Or perhaps you can get a custom kydex sheath made for it and carry it in a Merc Harness.

Some sort of neck or belt sheat in kydex would probably be the best bet. Although a knife is a rather poor SD tool in reality.

I am an immigrant (waiting for the Green Card) - in this position I can buy a gun but cannot carry it concealed.
IWB knife carry is a good suggestion, though.

Thanks

It is not such a bad thing for people to see your knife as it is probably more a deterrent to them if they see it and know that you are armed with a knife.

Two possibilities for your consideration.

1 - sew either a strip of cloth or a small pocket on the inside of your pants pocket. Then the knife can be entirely concealed inside the pocket, either clipped to the strip or secure in it's own little pocket. The knife will retain its orientation this way.

2 - Make a pocket sheath that will hold the knife while in the pocket. The sheath should be of such a shape that it will retain its orientation in the pocket.

Just clip it inside your waistline of your pants and pull your shirt outjust far enough for it to be covered. This is not uncomfortable if you have it in the right spot.

I know this is way ugly -but it's cheap ,quick and it works. I've lightly sanded a number of clips ,cleaned them with 190 proof alcohol and then baked on black DuroCoat paint. (Obviously you remove the clip to do this.) This will wear around the edges -but that's a whole lot less conspicuous than a big shiny clip.
After a year or so of daily use - simply repeat the process.
I'd also suggest taking a look at one of STR's lowrider clips -he can anodize these Titanium clips several different colours or you can paint them black as I have done.
I assume you're operating this way now-but: I'd endeavour to employ a heightened level of situational awareness over using a knife. Two reasons: 1.) Threaten with a knife and you've given a guy with a gun a reason to shoot you. This will have at least some impact on what (if anything) he gets charged with.2.) Use a knife for self defence and you can probably kiss any hope of a green card away. None of us has complete control of our environment - but avoiding trouble is way better than fighting your way out of a situation.

If you heat colour a beadblasted bit of Ti you can get a similar dark blue to that on a set
of jeans. If the clip is satin or polished you get a different finish that doesn't match so well.

I wouldn't use a Umnumzaan for SD. I'll go against the Prac Tac grain (who claim you can use a toothbrush for SD, wonders why :rolleyes) and say that knives are not good for SD unless specifically designed with that in mind.

I would instead go for something purpose designed or a firearm, but you mentioned issues with the later.

No need to bring a knife to a gun to a gun fight,I carry an springfield emp 40, a knife is a good tool but a last ditch effort as a weapon. But seeing you are waiting on your card in the waist is best I think until you can get your ccw

I work in a legal office environment. I carry a Mnandi in the pocket (the clip looks more like a pen than a knife) and a Sebenza IWB. The Mnandi doesn't seem to bother people (even when I'm slicing an apple), but if some of these folks knew I had the Seb on my person, they would freak out (mainly because they're clueless idiots who don't realize that assault is a behavior, not a device). And if they found out that I have a Glock in my briefcase, they would really become apoplectic!
