EDC Considerations: Pants? Setting? Size?

I saw a thread in what EDC knife do you have today and the guy said that in his urban, office setting, a Mini Grip or Dragonfly is preferred as anything larger takes up a bulge in his pants pocket and he does not want a clip to show. I never thought of that. I have a Persistence and can see where carrying it clipped in a nice pair of pants and tie when I go to lunch can be getting me stares. So I can see where keeping it in the pocket, the size and weight are a concern.

Are their other considerations that you men factor in? And what knives do you carry then that solve that problem?

I carry a small slipjoint with slacks, usually a mini muscrat, or small stockman but have clipped thin knives to my pocket before, like a delica for instance, smaller lighter, and pretty flat.

Usually wear cargo kahkis, shorts, riggs work pants, or jeans though, then the only concern is if my belt is up to the task of holding all my crap up lol :)

A tall slim folder riding vertically next to my wallet in my back pocket is also common, and works well

I have a SOG Flash 1 for those times where I'm dressed up. It's size doesn't create any noticeable bulges in the pocket, and the low ride clip buries the handle completely so it can't be seen. The clip is small enough that it looks like a pen clip.

I consider my clothing (pants, shorts, jeans, etc) and my pocket options (comfort) in addition to location (legality). Depending on these factors, I select knife style, size and carry method.

For work, I tend to carry a nicer (CF or wood handle) folder as they seem people friendly in sub 3 inch lengths. I have access to a larger heavier duty knife by it stays concealed. If I'm going to a crowded locations where losing a knife is a concern, I carry something cheaper and replaceable. Working or playing out doors calls for a fixed blade.

In the summer time when I tend to wear shorts, I like something light and slim for comfort.

+1 I also like the Flash I for these reasons.

Mnandi for office wear because it looks like a pen clipped in the pocket. Since I live in sunny (i.e. HOT) California I put on shorts the first thing when I'm off work. I typically grab a bigger knife at that point.

For me, it's where I'm going. If I'm going to a nice function & am "dressed up", I don't want to wear a knife clipped to my pocket. I'll usually wear a slip-joint.

If I have to carry something that's real light & won't show a bulge easily, then it's my K.R. Johnson Sodbuster. The jigged black micarta is dressy looking & it's so light & thin.

If I need super light/small, for some reason, then it's my LadyBug Salt. At .6 oz., there's not many that are as light & small with decent steel.

Otherwise, if I'm in jeans or shorts, then it doesn't matter. I carry whatever.

I work in IS (Information SYstems) for a major automotive OEM. The environment I work in is a professional office where people wear "dress casual" (dockers or dress pants, polo or button-down shirts and sometimes ties and suits). I usually am in khaki Dockers and button-down or polo shirts. My choice of office EDC is a folder with a blade ~3". I always carry it clipped in my right-front pocket. My shirts are usually tucked in so the clipped knife is clearly visible. I have carried this way for 7 years now at this same company and never had anyone "complain". I interact often with all departments and with many different people form engineers, managers, VP's, directors, secretaries to facilities/security.

It all depends on how you present yourself in a white collar environment. I think if you are dressed professionally, act professionally and don't give people the opportunity to think you are some crazed knife freak, then you carrying a knife will not be interpreted as threatening. I don't "whip out" my knife at every opportunity to use it but when I do need to use it, it is brought out in a non-threatening or "non-showy" way. I cut what needs to be cut and put it right away when done.

As far as what knives I EDC, lately, I carry either a Kershaw Skyline, Kershaw Blur CB, Kershaw Leek or Buck Vantage Pro. I have on occasion gone as large as a Spyderco Endura 4 G-10 and Benchmade 710 D2 but I am not comfortable carrying folders that large so I usually don't. I only use it descretly and usually in the data center or our department, both of which are away from the general population. The data center is especially out of the way since it is in a locked secured area and access is limited. The smaller the blade, the better in an office environment. Our actual company policy does not state a specific length, but talking to HR and my managers, 3" is the most they would like to see in the office. Most SAK's will not even raise and eyebrow here and many do carry those including my manager. Oh, and I think if you carry other EDC items like a flashlight (Quark Mini123 for me), a Fisher pen & Moleskine pad and/or a multitool (I often carry a SwissTool Spirit), the knife is seen more as a tool and not a weapon.

Small, slim and light with a flat profile for 'normal EDC'. I also prefer a smooth handle surface, so it’s easy to take the knife out or clip it back in place. H1 steel is also a plus.

I have a Spyderco Calypso Jr. Micarta which is about perfect. The same knife with a FRN handle is also a favorite. More grip, but still easy to get out of my pocket.

Lately the Spyderco Salt is getting a lot of everyday use. Not having to worry about corrosion makes life easier.

Other contenders: Benchmade MiniGrip and Spyderco Centofante (I love the thin blade and smooth handle).

If Spyderco would make a Spyderco Rescue 79 mm with a thinner plain edge blade, that would be my EDC knife. For everyday use, a sheepfoot blade makes a lot of sense.

Before I forget: my key ring is not complete without a small SAK.

I've discovered that most of my dress pants have a small coin pocket built into the bottom of the pocket. Perfect for change, but more importantly perfect for holding a knife comfortably in your pocket without using the clip. So that could be an option of carry for you. My "dress up" knife is a Benchmade 890 Torrent. It's relatively light and rides comfortably in my change pocket considering it is has just over a 3.5" blade .

RCKSHRK, I did that yesterday too and that was with the Persistence. I think a Delica or a Mini Griptilian will be perfect for me to carry that way as they are about a full ounce lighter. A bit thinner also.
