EDC Fixed Blade

I currently have a small Sebenza 21 and it is my favorite EDC. But I have always been very interested in fixed blade knives.

I have to admit, I know hardly anything about the fixed blade market. I was hoping you guys could point me towards a nice small fixed blade knife. Preferably something I could clip on to my belt and easily concealable. I am not looking for a rambo style tactical blade, just a nice small fixed blade for EDC purposes.

I have owned the ESEE Izula 2 and wasn't a big fan. I have no idea why, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer but I was about to ask the same question so I'm interested to see what people recommend.

If you can find one I highly recommend a Fall Creek Necker. I just got one second hand from another member here and I love it. It has S35VN steel with black G10 scales and colored liners that come in various colors (mine is toxic green). So far its like a fixed sebenza :) the fit and finish it great and the acid etched/stone washed blade is really well done. Shannon Carter is the maker of the knife and he is also a member here so you can probably contact him directly about it.

Seems like this topic is getting popular lately, and I think for good reason. Fixed blades are just so much more capable than folders. I recently got some smaller Bark River knives from KSF. North Star EDC completely conceals in a front pocket within a pocket sheath from KSF. Check them out. Several for about $200, and fit and finish were excellent on my examples. Some good custom makers can get you into a small fb for about $250. Check out Fiddleback Forge.

I live in CA...No folder length limits in 99% of the State. Great! Concealed fixed blade carry is prohibited statedwide though which SUCKS. Open carry is permitted but it is just too out of the ordinary in big cities that I live and frequent here. Look like a madman in the middle of downtown haha! I'd EDC a fixedblade for sure if they let me. I've been eyeing some of Phil Wilson's work like his 3.25 inch bird and trout...and also just got two S110v Spyderco Mules just today! Sucks that I can't really carry them unless I'm hunting or camping.

The Bark River Bravo-Necker II is worth a look. Comes with kydex sheath that can be worn around the neck or on the belt (with either a tek-lok type attachment or paracord). Both KSF and DLT have decent selections.

Bark river makes many smaller Knives that might be what you are looking for... I think Chris Reeve makes one too, Professional soldier. I recently switched to a fixed blade as my primary EDC. I went with a Bark River Necker in a pocket sheath. I carry a larger Bark River Gunny Hunter in my EDC bag. Benchmade and Buck have some nice offerings too. If you want to spend some money, Busse has their Anniversary Mean Street available now. I almost went with that but couldn't justify the coin. (I got two Bark River knives for the price of one of theirs.)

If you are worried about people's reaction, stick with traditional looks or bright colors. A black handled, black bladed knife is often assumed to be a weapon, the same knife in hunter orange is safety gear, and with stag handles it's a family heirloom.

We have this great sub-forum here, which is the KnifeMakers' forum... found here..

I have purchased a few of these "custom" knives over the last two yrs, ranging from perhaps $90 to $300. I don't "get out" any more, so I tend to gift these to relatives. For about $140 or so, my opinion, you can often "find" and buy a great 3" EDC, with good blade-steel and beautiful wooden grips.. Of course, you can buy production fixed blades on a different sub-forum, but I think custom fixed blades are pretty neat.

The Spyderco Street Beat is an excellent EDC fixed blade. The blade is ground thin to be a really nice slicer, and the slight recurve only makes it better. I've heard that the sheaths can be a little hit or miss, though. Mine could have better retention, but it isn't bad. The price has come down quite a bit too.

Ditto, Street Beat..... Excellent grip, vg10 steel holds quite the edge. So comfy to carry you forget it's there. You must see it in person, real piece of art.
Oh yeah ! Inside the waistband carry is noooo problem.... Use the sheath provided and install the clip for left hand carry ( if you are right handed). Slip the sheath in the waistband, clip on the outside. Grip your belt with the clip.....voila! Good comfy, solid carry.

Check your local laws.

Dozier Knives make several small fixed blades with great ergos and the almost legendary Dozier edge profile and heat treat. Their kydex sheath systems allow comfortable and secure horizontal, vertical and neck styles. My K28 personal is rarely far from me, unless my Companion or Gentleman's knife is in competition for my affection. Maybe not worn EDC all the time, (I've got plenty of folders), but always nearby. While there are plenty of great options around, (my damascus HHH Falcon is 'staring me down' as I write this), I think the small fixed Dozier makes a great example of utility, ergos, pride of ownership without too much expense/fear of loss/damage, and cutting power greater than its size. Just my two cent ramble.

Our own Flatblackcapo is now making fixed blades, under the name "Tupper Knives". I bring up Tupper Knives in particular, because if you can catch a maker early in his career, you can often get a good knife for a slightly lower price, and with less wait time.

I would normally suggest a Kabar Becker BK-14 or BK-24 with a set of handles that are available. Sheath is not set up for horizontal carry, but you can get a clip attachement for vertical belt carry. I carry mine in my back pocket (BK-24).

My favorite is a Dozier Personal, but Bob Dozier makes quite a few that would work with his horizontal kydex sheath (which is excellent). It will be sufficiently concealed if that is your concept. It is visible, but seldom noticed or you can let your shirt hang down a little to cover.

Basically a 3" or smaller fixed blade with a sheath for horizontal carry.

The Spyderco Moran is another one that works very well right out of the box. It is a very light and well made knife.

I too have the Street Beat, and it is a very good knife. I want pocket carry, and blade belly on this knife does not fit any of my KSF pocket sheaths. I will likely make one out of leather if I get the time and motivation to do so. I might look at the provided kydex to see what can be worked out for pocket carry as well.
