Hello all. I am currently in the market for a solid fixed blade for EDC use to compliment my Glock 17. I have been looking at the ESEE/R.A.T. 3 but I'm not sold on it yet. Any suggestions for a similar knife? I would like a blade length of no more than 3 1/2" as well as a kydex sheath. The whole rig must be easily concealable and comfortable. If you know of anything that fits the bill, I am open to all suggestions. Thanks!

Bark River Bravo Necker 1 and 2 come with kydex, and are pretty nice. More expensive than an option like say, the BK11 or 14 (which you could get custom kydex for, since they're so inexpensive). Custom jobs might also fit the bill.

I have looked at quite a few neck knives and I like them. However, I have pretty large hands, so I have yet to find one that handles comfortably.

I'm currently carrying a Pohan Leu/Leu Custom fixed blade I custom ordered to go with my Glock. I'll be ding a full review in a day or so - I've been carryign it everyday, but I want to carry it for a week before I do my review so that I can note any plus or minus points about the system. Keep your eyes peeled for it.

Spartan Enyo

It took me a few knives including the RAT-3 and HEST to land on it and I couldnt be happier. It is an amazingly well built knife with a good steel that has a great heat treat, I had to pry a jammed bullet casing out of my gun with it one time and it didn't hurt the tip at all. The knife is small but don't let the dimensions fool you, it has more handle space than the ESEE-3 and is more comfortable in my opinion. The only downside might be that the sheath only has static retention, I have never had it fall out on me but if you are rolling around on the ground with it or something it may come out.

Good luck

Hello,
This is what I use.

Bark River Gunny is a nice EDC fized blade. A tad longer than 3.5 in though, but still small enough to forget you have it. The RC-3/ESEE-3 is fine also.

I recently tried EDC with a fixed blade and it's given me a new appreciation for my pocket folders.

Bark River Necker 2 in CPM-3V.
Super tough steel alloy.
Reasonably rust resistant.
3.5" blade and 3.5" handle, so only 7" total length. Great blade-to-handle ratio.
Only 1/8" thick, but yet stronger than most thicker knives because of the toughness of CPM-3V.
Very good edge holding.
Conceals easily, especially if you don't put any scales on it, because if would be VERY flat.
Kydex included.
Just a little over $100.
I think it's the best overall combination of necessary attributes in a neck/EDC knife.

I'm seriously considering the Spyderco Mule Team 12. Anyone have any experience with this knife? Also, does anyone know of any good places to get micarta scales and a kydex sheath?

+1 for pohan leu. 3.5", 7" oal. What you might think is random grommet placement on the sheath is actually a well thought out spacing for all hole patterns on a TekLok clip large or small. I'm carrying ~45 degree edge up handle down small of back.

Bark River Bravo necker 2, TOPS C.A.T. or Tom Brown "scout" model (same knife), BK14, Mora classic from Ragnar (leather sheath and slightly longer blade but light and thin = easy to carry), EKA Nordic hunter (somewhat thick in the handle, but light and very well made, leather sheath. Many of the Scandi tradition knives come with good sheaths and are generally very light for what you get. I currently carry a Jarvenpaa puukko 3.5" blade. When I made the switch from folding knives to fixed for EDU I initially was adamant that the sheath had to be Kydex, now I prefer leather, or Kydex lined with leather. Too many of the synthetic sheaths out there dull and scratch up the blade - if the knife is for general use and will be in and out frequently, leather is a better choice IMHO. Of all my smaller fixed blades, only the Bark River has a synthetic sheath that doesn't adversely effect the edge tho it does scratch the blade somewhat.

I would check out the makers for sale section here. You can a lot of knife for the money and it will be a custom.

Go to A G Russell's web site and have a look at the Small Companion by Keith Murr. It's very comfortable, mounts in a horizontal kydex sheath that can be worn either side, and is very nice to use. The D2 blade steel works very well and mine maintains easily with a Sharpmaker. It's replaced my Izula 2 as my most often carried small FB now. Goes from warehouse to woods to garden very nicely.

I've met Keith a number of times and I own 3 of his knives. He is a good guy and makes good knives. He is sort of following after Bob Dozier in that he makes well made user knives for reasonable prices. That companion does look like a good utility knife.

The Swamp Rat Swamp Warden wouldn't be a half bad choice. While I find the blade steel (SR101) excellent far as edge retention and toughness goes it's a bit lacking when it comes to corrosion resistance but still it's one of my favorite blade steels.
