I'm looking for a new EDC knife. For years I've been carrying the same knife my granddad gave me when I was ten years old. Now I'm looking for a good replacement.

Requests/Suggestions/Preferences

I'd like it to be useful as a utility blade, a survival blade, and a self defense blade.
I'd like it to be a tanto style blade.
I'd like the blade to be over 3.25 and under 4.5.
I'd like it to be under $100.

Right now the SOG Vulcan seems to fit the bill but It's a bit pricey.
Thanks for any suggestions you have.
Oh, one last thing, if it could look cool, that's always a plus.

EDIT: Assisted opening would be nice, but not required.
Must have a plain edge, I'm not a fan of serrations, they get in the way too much.

Have you checked out Kershaw? They have many that completely fit your bill and are made in the USA. The Random Leek looks cool and has A/O if you want a cool factor.

Emerson CQC-7BW would be my suggestion...only thing is they are mostly over $100 but if you keep an eye on the exchange you just might be able to find one for less:D

I found mine for $75

Take a look at the Spyderco Manix 2. It does not have a tanto blade but the tip is really really strong and I think most will agree that is probably more usefull. At around $75-$80 shipped you'll have a hard time beating it.

I second that, 154cm is hard to get for less than $100

if you like tantos Cold Steel has the Recon 1 for less than $100, but it's aus8 steel, ugh... doesnt even compare to 154cm.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I'm not a huge fan of the spyderco models, something about the thumb hole ruins the blade geometry and it seems like the knife is bulkier than it needs to be.

The Emerson looks great though, I'll check it out.

If anyone has other recommendations or knows somewhere I can get a knife for less than retail I'd appreciate it.

i actually suggest a pliers based multitool like one of the Leatherman or Victorinox offerings, for edc.

the extra gizmos and suchlike will provide far more versatility than just a blade.

they're also very sheeple friendly.

Benchmade 14255. Has a 3.4" blade made of 154CM steel. Has G10 handles and the awesome AXIS lock. It is not an assisted opening but with the AXIS lock you don't really need it. Just pull the lock bar back and give it a little flip and it is open. A little over your price but can be found for about $113 and maybe cheaper if you look around. I'm not a fan of tanto blades but this knife looks pretty darn cool.

Edit: I have the 14205 which is more of a drop point and it is a great knife and super smooth. It also has a slightly thicker blade than most knives its size and has nice steel liners which makes for a pretty tough knife.

The OP doesn't like Spyderco but even so, the Manix 2 is one of the best choices meeting most of his needs, except that useless and ugly tanto feature.

Benchmade 950 Rift. Amazon has them for around $115 I believe. Reverse tanto blade for a strong tip, yet you won't lose the belly of the blade. Full liners for a little bit more rigidity. Plus it's long enough for what you listed above. I try to stay away from SOG stuff after my first and only SOG.

Manix 2, its a helluva knife for under $100. but there is also the buck vantage pro, which you can find for under 45-50. It offers S30v steel, almost unheard of in that price range.

The ZT 350 can be bought for 100 dollars (new).

This is a very strong made knife with assisted opening and s30v blade.
Thick liner lock.
I don't know the blade length but it will probably be about 3-3.5.

My other option would be the manix2 154cm just like the others mention.
About 80 dollars.

Both are probably some of the "biggest bang for the bucks" heavy duty knives.
