EDC folders really useful?

I think it is true - a good SAK or MT will get most people thru their day, and for many years all I had on me was a Vic SAK. It wasn't until 1995 when I started getting into folders, with Benchmade being my first "official" one.

For me, I would rather be a little overprepared then the opposite, so thats why I carry one. there are times when the cutting task requires a little more blade and handle length than a SAK offers.

Plus - where's the fun in limiting yourself?

In better working times I have a tool belt on about 8 hours a day and in that time I still keep an LM wave or Swisstool in there to cut down on weight and their tools work in a pinch. If not, there is something better suited for the job in my tool bag or at least in the truck. Some people like to carry all sorts of folders, fixed blades, flashlights and multi tools on their person at all times. On off hours a folder and occasionally a multi tool is fine.

After reading daemonza's original post, I checked out the thread. Here's what I posted on that blog as "Anonymous":

"Neither of your suggestions will work for me on a daily basis. I work in a warehouse and my cutting chores range from packing tape to zip ties to thin computer cabling to 4″ or 6″ thick styrofoam packing material. When I get home, I have garden chores, animal feeding chores, and a little trimming (I live out in the county south of Atlanta and have acres of woods in my back yard).

A medium sized folder is perfect for what I need and a nice one like a Spyderco CF/ZDP189 Stretch or a BM Rift goes to church on Sunday as well as going to work during the week, so I only have to keep up with and carry one nice knife."

I didn't use to carry a separate folder, so I understand where he's coming from. Today a folder + a knifeless multitool work best for me because I sometimes got things to do at my kid's school. If the multitool has a knife I can't legally carry it into the school building, leaving me with no tool at all.

We don’t all live in the city/suburbs and work in office buildings. Some of us require a larger, sturdier, locking or even fixed blade for daily use. If I worked in an office, I wouldn’t carry a Manix 2 every day. I would carry a SAK or something similar. Just carry what you need or feel comfortable with.

Depends on what you're used to. Most offices seem to be overflowing with tools for paper, so I might as well carry what I want.

I worked outdoors for 30 years, Buck Wrangler on my belt.

Now retired, I carry a small multi-plier on my keys, and a folder.

Who's the goofball who wrote that article? Shame he isn't here to defend his thesis. Kinda makes for a one-sided discussion!

One man's blog is one man's opinion.

I need both ( folder and mutiltool ) and use both on a daily basis and have for years and years.

edit - there seems to be a lot of office working , slacks wearing folks who cannot carry a folder , even a small folder, who may be jealous of the fact that there are those of us that carry whatever we please all day long. :)

I have a super duty 550 filled with all the tools I need.
And a para military in my pocket. Permanently.
It is very useful. I use it for my personal food prep sometimes too. So it helps having a little extra blade in the pocket.
I love working outside everyday. Or should I say playing..
Scaring away annoying customers with my machete.

A multi-tool is too heavy and bulky for me to carry everywhere while a folder can be very light and yet provide 3+ inch cutting edge. I used my folder to cut my meat during lunch today. It did a much better job than the dull steak knife they provide. I'll have to touch up the edge since it came on a ceramic plate but that's no big deal. A smaller SAK would have worked but it's too small for comfort.

I carry my 3 inch blade folder as well as a Vic SAK just about everyday. I can see a folder not being necessary if you work in an office environment but even if I did work in such an environment I would still carry a folder because I am a knifenut, it's what I do everywhere I go.

I didn't know that the small slipcase folder I have in my left pocket is not an EDC.

Was there some announcement declaring what "EDC" had to mean?

Thats what I thought, i was under the impression that it was whatever you carried everyday, be it a SAK or a Multi-tool, or a sharpened stick. (I like the sharpened stick idea myself)
