Hello all!
I am a volunteer fire fighter and am looking into having a small knife made to commemorate my service. So far I think I would like to keep it between 4-5 inches and it must be fixed. I'm also going with a red handle. I can't decide on steel, handle materials, profile or features however. My primary purpose for this knife is to be an every day carry. I will likely never use it on a call, so I was thinking of a "tactical" designation, perhaps some sort of combination edge on the back or serrations to give it a little more subsistence in extreme situations. I know a local maker whom I've worked with in the past, I will commission him for the job. It is only a matter of knowing what I need in this project.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I guess I will start off... (this is my opinion and is probably not what you are looking for, but ill give it a shot)
Blade length-4.5
Steel-M4
overall length-9.5
Handle material-red/black g10
americanized tanto
sharpened swedge
Kydex-teklock
Handle shape-thinner style loveless
Thickness-5/32

None of these go together but it would make one hell of a knife!!!

Here is a link to a knifemaker and Toronto Firefighter, James McGowan

My son, Dean, is also a Professional Firefighter in Toronto and has one of James special tools as seen resting on the boot and helmet which I got for him when he graduated 10 years ago. Just give him an email and see if he has something or how quickly he could create what you need.

,

I like the G10,the handle and the length. I don't think I'd go for a tanto. perhaps a drop point if anything. I'd like the handle shape to be compact enough that it is easy to carry but with enough rigidity to give it good purchase in the hand.

Here is one style I make that I think would fit the bill

I can recommend Eric Fritz from personal experiance. I gave one to my stepgrandson when he graduated from basic training. He finds it to be an excellant user and a conveniant size.

Jeremy Robertson makes some very hard work ready and capable knives. I'd recommend taking a look at some of his work, you can Google "Calavera Cutlery" to find his website.

As far as having a hard use tactical EDC, I'd go with 3V for the steel and maybe a convex grind.
