alright guys, i know you just love these advise question threads:rolleyes: so here's another:
i want to get an edc for someone that really needs one. it needs to be under $100 and i want him to know its a nice quality knife (functionally and aesthetically) without me telling him, but not so nice he won't use it. it needs to have a blade length of under 3" (no exceptions!), have a very good edge from the factory, and be able to keep that edge well, holding up to just light/moderate daily or every-other-daily use. needs to have a pocket clip, and be able to be opened/closed one handed, and lock open. carbon steel not a plus, a type of stainless would be better. thanks again guys!

Spyderco Caly 3. He wont put it down.

VG-10 is incredible. Spyderco fit and finish is top notch. The knife looks good, feels great in hand, and is not flashy. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, full flat grind leaf blade and wire clip!!!

Kershaw Leek. Plenty of styles & colors to choose from, and it has a 3" blade. Great quality, easy to maintain, durable, and ...

Sheeple friendly.

The Leek is a great EDC for under $100.00

All good choices so far, but look at Benchmade Mini Grip. Axis lock is so good it's a work of art!

Hey Quattro - What is that little tool you have there? That thing looks pretty useful and cool. I need one :)

As far as an EDC gift goes I would say a Mini-Grip PE fits here. It's small but not too small to get the job done and the Axis lock is second to none.

I just picked up a Spyderco Delica but I really don't like the way it rides in my pocket while clipped. It's pretty high and kind of in the way and the clip is SS so it sticks out like a sore thumb. I live around a bunch of brainless sheeple so keeping it a bit subdued is key for me.

The Mini-grip is it for me!

Can't argue with any of the suggestions so far, I'll throw in the Spyderco Delica 4

I have to second BOTH the Mini Griptilian AND the Caly 3. I have several Griptilians including the Ritter, and a Caly 3. They're both great knives.

The Caly 3, though, is a "prettier" or finer looking knife. It looks a little more custom than factory, so you may want to keep that in mind!

I think the Kershaw Leek may have just been custom designed for you.
It's a good friendly looking knife, very well made in the US, and I think even the damascus Leek is under a hundred. Kershaw's have fabulous edges from the factory, they are somewhat famous for it.

Also I have never met someone who was disappointed with their Kershaw knife, and living in Portland OR I've met a lot of people with Kershaws.

Especially from the perspective of cost/performance, I think just about anything from Kershaw would be very hard to beat.

I would also have suggested one of the Benchmade Grips, but they are that kind of knife that doesn't necessarily look expensive, despite being very well made.

Spyderco Caly3/Delica. Benchmade 525 but that is a little over your limit by about $3. Benchmade 555 Mini-Grip. BM707.

Sometimes you can grab a Lava for under the $100 mark, and similarly a Kopa Quince

Other suggestions from Spyderco would be the Native I, II or III
Or the new Tenacious which represents pretty good value for the knife you get.

Cheers

IMHO Spyderco Caly3 or C105 Persian, both are little under $100 and terrific knives. Great ergos, great steel, great look.

I'm going to have to agree with this :) I have a C105 Persian and it is an absolutely incredible knife, perfect in every degree, right out of the box, the one thing is, if he has large-ish hands it might be a tight fit for him the way that the handle is shaped:

If you think that it might not work for him because of the handle, then the Caly 3 is your best bet :P

+1 on the boker CLB I have a trance as my shepple knife, best $30 knife I've bought. If your looking for something even nicer look no further than benchmade.

thanks guys for all your responses! it's looking like either the caly or the persian so far. slimness is also a bonus as he's not used to carrying anything larger than the $3 lock blade on his keychain.
