I've been lurking around reading and searching theads, I'm looking for an edc for my wife, she works in an office building and carries pepper spray and a surefire light she could use for stiking. I've been thinking about getting her a blade to carry with her and have in the car since she drives about an hour and a half one way to work on back roads and inner city street. I'm looking for some suggestions, things like type, fixed or folding or both. What do some of the ladies out there carry daily? Any suggestions would be very welcome.
Thanks

Get her a Kershaw LEEK (pink or rainbow) these are great little knives that open VERRRRY fast:D Or maybe a Spyderco Delica . IMO , A knife is not a good self defense weapon for a woman. Women are generally weaker than men & with that in a bad situation they have a good chance of having the blade taken away from them ! I would get her & yourself to get a CCW permit if your state allows & invest in a good handgun (GLOCK:D).

the only knife my wife carries is on her Leatherman Squirt P4.

but, a while ago i gave a female friend (a teacher) a Spyderco Lum Chinese Folder. she loves it, and so do all the 'non-knife' people that see/borrow it.

Strong side, Emerson Combat Karambit!

Simple to use. It is waved, and comes out of the pocket already open. There are many different ranges of motion and hand holds possible. With a finger in the hole, no way are you going to drop it or have anybody disarm you. Back that up with an La Griffe, on the other side!

Get her a training knife and she can practice on you......

My woman carries the bladetec Mouse II. perfect for everything she needs to cut. While camping a small Seb or BM705.

As for a knife? Get her some blade training first. After that she should have a idea of what she wants. In the mean time, the Delica or mini-griptilian are great ideas as basic blades, and can be found in sheep safe colors.

Sorry reconranger the Karambit is the wrong idea for someone with no training. Looks intimidating but with out extensive knowledge, it's just a poor utility knife.

I think without proper training, pepper spray, a flashlight & a knife all for SD would really just confuse her and cause hesitation.

I would say Emerson La Griffe. It is small and concealible, at the same time very effective once put into motion. With the finger hole, you can get an extremely secure grip that would be very difficult for another person to take away. It almost becomes an extension of you hand and could do some serious damage.

Got wifey an opportunist as an EDC and an Activator for the field (fixed blade):

She likes the benchmade butterflies :)

Thanks for all the replies. Coaldigger, I have my ccw and my wife has had the training for her ccw but lost her papers and now has to retake her training class. I do agree she will need knife handling training but I was thinking if she had a knife in case of emergency. It seems that most people like the spyderco, I carry an emerson cqc7 that is always with me and love, I actually sent it back to have it cleaned up and it was killing me to be without it. I gave her my backup gerber ezout jr to have until I get her something she can pick out that she likes. Thanks again for the replies.

I agree with Kaizen1's comment, and think that if you're giving her the knife primarily for SD, you should make sure she has a comfortable knowledge of how to use the knife (and pepper spray and flashlight) for SD.

As for ideas, I have no wife to give knives to, but I've given my mom a Benchmade 530, and my sister a Benchmade 707. Between those, I think the 707 could be more easily opened under stress, but again, refer to my statement above. I think the top choices in general (read: for normal, everyday cutting tasks, ergos, size, and with the possibility of SD use thrown in) are probably the Benchmade Mini Grip, Spyderco Delica, and Kershaw Leek (all three of these have a pink option, if you think that might be good). The 530 would perhaps offer an advantage for weight and discreet pocket carry, and the 707 (or 440) would, in my opinion, be far "classier" knives.

But if it's truly self-defense that you want your wife to be prepared for, why get her a wimpy pocket knife like a Mini Grip or Leek, when you could get her a pocket SWORD? Benchmade Rukus is clearly the way to go here...

My wife has been carrying the Spyderco Delica for years. She likes it very much and uses it for various small chores, i.e., cutting threads, or slicing an apple when she is out someplace, etc.

Self defense??

She carries a S&W 36 in .38 Spec. for that.

Now thats what I'm talking about  :D
Knives are great with some good training but a handgun w/ some training is even better selfdefense! Pack'em both after some proper training & your in great shape !;)

I couldn't suggest a particular kind, as I don't know much about fixed blades, but that's what I'd suggest... a fixed blade of some sort.

Because, we can all open a folder in no time at all, because we love them and play with them and since boyhood have been used to owning and opening one. A woman, and not to stereotype your wife or anything, but a woman will not likely be as quick on the draw with a folder as you or I; particlularly if she's got the adrenaline shakes. If there was a little fixed blade in a nice leather sheath in her purse or pocket, she could likely have that out faster than a folding knife.

I could be wrong.... wouldn't be the first time. Someone here's likely got a great little neck knife they'd love to recommend to you... could keep that in a purse.

Sorry reconranger the Karambit is the wrong idea for someone with no training.

Notice that I did recommend a trainer knife, and there are 4 training videos as well!!! This is absolutely the best knife for an "untrained" beginner. Anybody can learn to use it effectively in a very short time.

Dream tonight that you are being attacked by someone with one of these....that will be a real nightmare!

Lol, my wife carries a SAK executive and predominently only uses the scissors :)

I'd say a Spyderco Delica should fit the bill. Good blade, not to heavy or bulky, pretty straight forward. Plus it doesn't look like you're planning to kill everyone in the room like a Kerambit does.

Dude, I had Guro Jeff use as a demostration dummy at Blade in 05. I know how sick they can be.

I'll tell you the footwork and distance control are not Basic level stuff, let alone using one. I've actually had some training with one. I never actually recomend a knife a SD tool untill someone get training.

Sorry I missed the trainer reference, that is a good idea. They really can hurt if someone isn't being carefull.

If you have speed and desire a knife is not such an easy weapon to take away from a defender. That said a lot of people, not just women will pale when it comes to actually using any weapon against a fellow human. Those types will not be capable of defending themselves with any type weapon. I don't think a woman of the mindset that she will defend herself is done any favor by carry of a knife that is deemed small and suitable for her sex by her man. Get her a Spyderco Military and if she's the type that will be determined not to become a victim it will serve her well. I carry one in D-2 and it's a good self defense knife. Very light weight for it's size,(nice reach) sharp and offers a secure grip, along with solid lockup.
