Hi, I've been hovering around here for awhile. My edc has basically met its demise :(, it was a CRKT tanto M16, I do have a few others but I prefer the tanto point. Any suggestions what I could replace it with? I've been thinking of a CQC-7/Super CQC-7.

Thank you. I'll have to go for awhile.

IIRC that has a chisel grind. Nothing wrong with that, but it could come as a shock if you aren't expecting it.

At the risk of being the target of stones, I will suggest you could also look at a lower price tagged Cold Steel Voyager Tanto. Though I have no love for their advertising, they seem to have done a good job on the Voyager and I think it is V ground.

I strongly recommend you look at the Tarani 5.11 Investigator. I have the spear point verson. Don't be dismayed by the combo edge. This knife is strong, sharp, well-built, very ergonomic, and will give you, IMO, 75% of the performance of an Emerson at 40% of the cost.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'll check them out. I do like Sog, I have a Tomcat and Meridian. I don't mind combo edges or chisel grinds, the M16 had both. As for Cold Steel, I have a Ti-lite, I was considering the Recon 1 as a replacement.

At the risk of being Boo'ed off the forums how about a CRKT M-16? I replaced my M16 13SF that my daughter wanted with another M16 13 SF to carry at the base and a CRKT 12FDZ for use at work. Both are AUS 8, Combo edge & Tanto point. The CRKT M16s just seem to fit my hand well and I carry them instead of a couple of Benchmade Red Label knives I thought I was going to carry.:)

No boo here :) I like the M16s. Though neoflare could you describe how your M16 met it's demise as mentioned in the 1st post? I'm interested in knowing as I own several M16s and I'm under the opinion that they are quite tough folders with IMO good steel except for the irritating chisel grind.

I also end up carrying my M16s instead of my Kershaws, Spydercos and Emerson. It's not too expensive so I'm more likely to use it.

How about the Reverse Tanto Benchmade 940. I think you would really like it. The Cold Steel Recon 1 or Gunsite would be good if you want tanto only. GOOD LUCK! Kevin

Thanks for all the ideas. Cotherion the demise wasn't through any mechanical fault of the knife, I was quite happy with the M16, the reason for its demise was it slipped out of my hand and it now currently resides at the bottom of a lake. I currently have 14 non tanto knives but this was the only tanto I had, what I really liked about it was the tip strength and that the secondary point could be used similarly to a sheep's foot blade.

I'm with Spooky- You already know you like the M16 ( it is an astonishingly usefull knife design) M16's are relatively cheap ( the Fire Dept version 12EDZ with AUS8 blade was available a couple of weeks ago for $16!-I bought 2) The AUS4 blade on the little 10KZ version at Walmart is at least serviceable when rebeveled to permit useful levels of keenness)

Ok, I've been doing some research. Right now its looking like another M16 or a Benchmade Griptilian 553. Stumper I wish I lived where you do cause you'd never find one that cheap anywhere here in Australia.

Wally World had the Kershaw Blur Tanto, the last time I looked. Look at the build date on the blade - if Sept '07 or later, it's an improved Sandvik steel. The rest of the knife is made in the USA. They also have an M16 - I don't recall which model - it's ~$20. Of course, their best deal, depending on the day you ask me, is either a Buck 110 ($25) or Spyderco Native (S30V - $40), both US-made.

Well if you patiently wait in the "for sale" section of Bladeforum a cheap M16 may pop up.

I say wait patiently and get both! While I like the M16 and it certainly is tough with a very (I think stronger tip than most other knives) I also feel that variety is equally important.

Build up on your family of metal! I did it and Kershaws, CRKTs and Cold Steels are relatively affordable. Take advantage of the combined shipping to reduce your costs.

Whatever your choice, let us know ok and good luck.

What aboout a Benchmade Vex (liner lock, big, tanto has thumb stud, regular has thumb hole, I like thumb stud better, so I got the tanto, eve, though I prefer clip blades.)
My CRKT came back from being sent off to the factory after it broke, Took ~2 weeks, adn they sent me a brand new knife, no questions asked. Pretty good warranty, although it's good to write a letter explaining what happened, why the knife is broken. The knife is currently clipped to my pocket.
~~Best of Luck

Take a look at the Benchmade Griptilian 553 which is an awesome knife or also the Kershaw Tanto Blur. Both are around $60 each and a great buy for the price!
