EDC Knife Decision

Hi there,

I'm buying a new knife for EDC (every day use and self-defence), but it's got to be affordable, and I've been looking at a few things. First thing I thought of was a Spyderco Endura which is cheap, has a fairly long blade and comes fully or part serrated. I also thought of the Native which has a shorter blade and only comes in half-serrated or plain (although I'd probably go plain in this case) but it's got a double edge on it, is the same price and does look very comfy. I don't really want to spend much more than that sort of price as I'm making several knife purchases at the moment, not to mention a load of other stuff. Which would be better do you think? And is there anything else of a similar price you could reccomend? I;ve had a Smith & Wesson HRT for some time but where the blade meets the liner is wearing away very badly and it dosn't keep an edge very well, want something that's gonna last a fair bit of use (but I'm not looking to go camping or hunting with it or anything).

Thanks

The Native isn't actually double-edged. The swedge on a spear point is unsharpened without user modification.

My suggestion would be to get ahold of a waved Endura if you can. Both Natives and Enduras are great knives, but the gadget factor of the wave pushes that model over if you can get one.

You seem to have some good knives in mind, so I suggest that you pick the one that has that certain, indescribable something that appeals to you.

I must admit, I'd not heard of the Waved Endura! Looks very nice and it seems to be in stock for a good price in several places, but which is the best? I've never bought a knife online from the US (I doubt it's exported anywhere).

I'd pick the endura, delica, calypso jr, or dragonfly over that Native any day. I just didnt like the way the native felt in my hand at all. It wasnt the easiest spyderco to open either. The waved endura looks pretty sweet though.

Well, I recommend the Cold Steel Voyager a lot. I like the 4-incher a great deal but also own the 5- and 6-inch models because I like 'em so well. I also like Benchmade knives. Just make sure the blade's made from good steel.

I recommend the Delica in this case - unless you want a finger choil, as on the Native. The Delica because it's very similar to the Endura, but shorter. If you want a finger choil, I am not sure what to recommend from Spyderco (though I would if the Calypso 3 was out already). You can find Calypso Jr.'s on eBay if y ou search at the right time, and that is an excellent knife.

Why would the shorter Delica be better than the Endura?

I think I'm leaning towards the Endura. Still pondering whether to go for a plain edge or combo. I wish I could have a mostly plain edge with just a couple of serrations :( I'll probably go combo edge in the end but I dunno.

While I'm here, I'm also thinking of buying a Boker Applegate-Fairbairn for self-defence, and a Brusletto Kystkniven for an eating/odd job knife. Opinions on these choices? I did consider the Brusletto Troll, but that barrel shaped handle just looks ugly to me.

St. Steven,
Be mindful of how you are going to carry your EDC. If you are going with inside the pocket the Delica would be a good choice for size sack. I carry my Endura inside the waistband and sometimes forget that it is there because it is so comfortable. I am not a big fan of the wave feature, (nothing against it just my preference) but in uniform it would be a nice feature. By the way the new Endura is one of the sharpest knives I have owned. I have to agree with Tom, I have also had many knives and always wind up back to my Endura. There is my 2 cents.

I have an Endura II, and I love it. I can only feel the weight of it in my pocket when moving quickly. it is a wounderful blade. Question: Who will see you use it? whenever I pull mine out for simple tasks in an enviroment that is not akin to larger blade some people are shoked in horror at the size of it. But I love it just the same.

I'm not going to choose a knife on the basis of if other people will approve of it or not. I don't point my knives at people or act threateningly, I only take them out to do something. If someone gets scared by me opening a box, then they need help to be honest. <- Sorry, probably sounded a little rant-ish, not meant that way.

My pockets are pretty big, I've been carrying a S&W HRT magnesium (only 0.2" shorter than the Endura, but wider and heavier) for some time as I said and that never bothered me and I've also carried a Spyderco UKPK which is the same size as a Delica and I can easily forget I'm wearing that so I'm sure an Endura will be fine. One thing that does concern me about the Endura is the pocket clip. I hate the pocket clip on my HRT but I love the one on my UKPK, and the Endura's looks more like the former than the latter :(
