Hi guys and gals. I am looking for a small fixed blade to carry. I am pretty well covered on the med to extra large knives. But a lot of the smallish knives I have owned, tried, seen, etc... didn't have a secure enough grip for my taste. Just one of my "things". Now one of the knives out there that feel really good is the CRKT Ryan Plan B.

I just wish it were made of a better steel. Can anyone suggest a smallish fixed blade knife like this with better steel, and a deep chiol or good front guard? I really do not want to go over $200 at the moment. Thanks.

Maybe a Bark River mini-Northstar with Impala Horn scales. They're pretty grippy, but no finger choil.

Maybe a RAT-3 with Micarta. While the Micarta isn;t rough-textured, it's still fairly grippy, and even more so when damp.

For small fixed blade ... i love the benchmade 210 activator (snody design) it is real small though 5.5" oal... it however is quite stout

I generally like CRKT knives, but the April issue of Leatherneck magazine has an article titled The Cutting Edge, and in it the Marines test a CRKT Ultima. Many of them didn't like the grip on that knife, it was very rough on their hands for general field use.

My preference is for knife scales with little or no texturing, usually unpolished G10. Good grip, usually no blisters with heavy use.

The knife pictured here has a much less 'aggressive' grip, but I think it would still be kind of rough on your hands if used a lot. Those troughs on those scales look like they're just waiting to chew your hands up, IMHO.

But, you may like them. I'd say buy it and try it out, if it's within your budget.

thx - cpr

The Ryans have a good price at Smoky Mountain Knife Works at the moment...or last time I checked. Twelve bucks.

I like the Ryan 6s, but recall, they're meant primarily as defense tools, not EDCs for use in cutting everyday materials. As far as a fixed blade, I'd just go to eBay and do a search using the word "knife" and see what pops up. You know all the good names to look for and you see the price.

edc's come up all the time on the knifemaker's forum for sale area, and most of them are under $200- and handmade!

That was the first FB I EDCed, but I moved to something better.

You should check Daniel Koster's kardas.

TL,
Leu Custom made me a small kozuka for EDC. It has an awesome handle and if you use the palm-loaded grip, that knife aint going anywhere. $145. Good luck!

I will also suggest the GL Drew "$65 Knife". I've got about 30 fixed blades and this is the one that I go to when I want to EDC a fixed blade. Drop him a line and he may be able to tell you when another batch will be available.

They are rough , or were rough on my version.

I sanded them semi smooth and rounded off the corners , knife is much more more comfortable now.

Lots of leads here. I always check the "knife makers" sub-forum here but am often too late. And I really like the look of Dan Costners stuff. Thanks for the input guys.:thumbup:

ka-bar makes the TDI law enforcement knife thats kind of like that. I do own some. Im pleased with most their products.

How about the Blackjack Small. New Graham and Knife Outlet both have them. Good price, decent steel, and an hand-filling handle.

I just did the same thing a couple of weeks ago. What I got was an Entrek Cobra. It has a 4.0" clip blade that is .187" thick and the top clip can be sharpened by the end user if so desired. The black canvas micarta grips have a firm hold and there is actually room enough for my hand to fit, with the handle being 4 5/8" long. Full tang and constructed from 440C steel, and before you dismiss it because of the steel, the Entrek folks do a tempering process that brings out the best in the 440C. There is also one called the Companion that is the same size of the Cobra only it is a spear point. They ride in a nice high-mount kydex sheath. Here is a link to check them out at and this is where I got mine because they had the best price ( $108.00 plus $7.60 shipping) I could find. www.discountsupplyunlimited.com
