I have an EDC Knife Question, how many of you only have one EDC Knife? The reason that I ask is because my grandfather recently died and he only had one EDC Knife his entire life.

A better question is what knife do we always have in our pockets or strapped to our hips, or hanging by our necks....for me, I always have either a Spyderco Delica 4 or Dragonfly in my pocket.

Well, since this is a knife forum populated by enthusiasts, you probably won't find many here who only have one knife they carry. However, it's a perfectly valid approach, especially if you view a knife as a tool to get a job done and don't have any particular fascination with them beyond that.

I could get by just fine for all of my daily EDC cutting needs with a medium 3-blade stockman slipjoint pattern or a medium sized Swiss Army knife, while using task specific tools (utility knives, kitchen knives, scissors) for situations when the pocket knife is not enough.

I actually carry three knives with me daily - two on my person and one in a bag, that serve different purposes. There's some overlap and I could probably make do with just one of them, but having different tools suited for different tasks makes sense to me, and they don't add any significant burden so why not have more than one available.

Two of them are the same every day, the third slot is my "for fun" carry that I rotate though different knives just because I like the variety and enjoy using different styles and patterns.

But your grandfather was probably a wiser man than I and certainly less broke! :)

I only carry one folding knife with me. Recently, it has been my Umnumzaan. But, I have carried many others in the past, including large Sebenza, Grayman Dua and many others. But one at a time for me. I don't tend to switch off knives often, as I carry the ONE that I like the best.

Can't say I only have one EDC knife but there is only one knife I have that I have carried every day since I got it. It's the one I *always* have with me. But since it only has one blade, I'd be constantly washing it. Simpler for me to carry at least one knife that I don't mind getting dirty and one that I might use on food or food packaging. Even carrying a traditional multi-bladed knife wouldn't work for me since those blades tend to sit sooo close to each other in the handle. Can't do it.

I usually carry at least 2 blades on me every day, a Benchmade 810 Contego and a Zero Tolerance 0301 TS. When I work, sometimes rope and zipties need to be cut, boxes need to be opened, etc. and there have been several times where I have had to loan out a blade to make the job go faster. My hard use "beater" knife that I usually loan out is my Spyderco Tenacious. I could survive every day with any one of the 3 knives, but by having 3 my day goes much smother.

I used to carry a Case 3 blade stockman on the farm. It did everything I needed. I cut rope, opened packages, notched wood, castrated hogs, etc with it. I even field dressed a deer with it. From a tool perspective, I could go the rest of my life with just this knife and more specific tools for specific jobs as already mentioned. Unfortunately, I have an addiction/affliction/affection and, as my wife says, I am irrational because I NEED dozens and dozens of different knives.

I do use only three knives on a regular basis:
- Sebenza 21 Large for EDC.
- Strider SMF Lego for outdoor.
- CS Recon 1 for real hard use.
Surely I own a few more, but this trio fits all my daily needs. Its like not wearing one pair of shoes all the time for me -- have a right tool for a specific job

Just curious but are you implying that there is inherent superiority in having just one EDC knife for one's entire life?

It all depends on personal preference on how many EDC's one has.

I have a pretty large collection and ALL of them get carried, no safe queens here.

Yes some def get carried more than others but I have a huge rotation.

I think variation is always a good thing.

But if a person finds one knife they love and feels its the only one they need then there's nothing wrong with that.

I personally could never have just one EDC, I love knives WAYYY too much for that lol.

Not sure how you took anything antagonistic from the mans simple statement.

To the OP, sometimes I wish I could get by just owning just one knife for EDC. It would certainly make the wallet a little heavier.

I have had tons of knives over the years. Over time, I have wound up with only two knives that I carry EDC at work. One is a multitool which rarely gets used and the other is a full sized locker that sees 90% of the work.I could not get by with a small slipjoint for work. Ihave found that a big knife will do everything that a little one will, but the reverse is not so. For casual EDC, I carry whatever turns my crank that day, usually a smaller single blade folder.

I believe it also has something to do with mind-set. My father carried a three blade stockman his entire life; if he needed a tool he went to the garage. He never understood why I carried a knife (or two) and a multitool AND had a tool box in my truck. I feel naked leaving the house with one knife...maybe its about being content?

Both my grandfathers carried a Case and Buck, respectively, in their pocket until the day they passed. Different times & a different generation. As a whole, they viewed pocket knives as a tool that could pretty much do anything an axe or hammer couldn't. Don't believe they viewed knives as something to collect or stockpile.

I only carry one knife every day for the last 7 months, my Sebenza 25.

I actually sold off all my other knives about 6 months ago and imagine I'll just keep edc'ing this 25 until Chris comes out with the next improved model...

I have 3 EDC knives as of today. One is always with me as a back-up or a loner to someone who needs one. The other two get rotated depending on how I feel and what I might be doing that day.

I have a fair share of low end wal-mart knives that i used to carry starting when I was 14 or so till I was 22. I moved up to a few cold steel knives. At 27 I found benchmade and spyderco. I probably have 20 knives and the misses has about 6.

I bought a sage 2 about a year ago and it is all I carry. I have a multitool with a blade for abusive tasks. I'm trying to not buy another knife because it's not what I want to invest heavily in. I go to yard sales often and people always are selling stuff they had to have 10 years ago. When I'm 50 looking back having boxes of $100-$400 knives won't be what makes me happy.

Back on track. I'm trying hard to carry this sage 2 until it or I die. I love the idea of a life long companion. I kinda view it as a pocket wife.... maybe it says something about those of you that have lots of different knives in your pants.. ;) kidding. Grandpa was a one knife guy, dad just doesn't care about knives. I want to be a one knife guy.

LOL.... I'm at the complete other end of the spectrum. I'm fascinated with the differences in knife brands and styles, locking systems, blade steels, etc..., and I rotate daily through a collection of over 200 folders. Some days I carry one, some days two. But I always have a little Leatherman PS4 Squirt buried in my left pocket for the extra tools it has. But even there I rotate through all of the PS4 Squirt colors.

One EDC.... I'll pass.lol. Honestly, I could get by with just one folder. Any decent
quality/design knife would probably do. I just don't want to.
So long as I'm not causing trouble or breaking laws by doing so,
I see no reason not to have 3 or 4 on me.
But to each his own. If you're happy with just one, I'll be happy
for you.

I stick with the same one for months.
Victorinox Pioneer-a year
Spyderco Native 5-3 or 4 months
Now its a Delica
