Hello, Hows it going? I have a quick question. What is a decent folding EDC knife for under $30-40? I'm looking for a medium sized utility, folding knife, that feels solid, sharp and will hold up and look nice after many uses. Ill be using the knife for tasks like cutting boxes, carving wood and other general purposes. What knife would you recommend?

Thanks A Lot!

A Buck 112 would work nicely.

Welcome to the forums!

You will likely get a lot of point responses (i.e. those that specify an exact model).

I am going to go outside the norm here and suggest that you invest (time) in some personal knowledge first. Read up on maintenance and sharpening. You will likely find that with a little practice and a little cash (I do mean *little*) you can develop the skills and equipment necessary to maintain almost any decent knife in your price range to do the jobs you require.

This place is a GREAT resource for such knowledge!

Ontario RAT-1 is currently a terrific deal at about $25. It may be a little large for your purposes, but take a look.

The Ka-Bar Doziers are excellent, somewhat smaller, and around $20. They are probably your best bet, being light, flat, and less likely to terrify non knife people.

In the ultra budget category, the Rough Rider Work Knives are way better than they have any right to be for under $10. The regular version has about a 3. 75" blade, and the smaller about a 2.5" blade.

All the above have locks of some type. but if a slippie is acceptable, take a look at Queen's Country Cousin. It's a medium sodbuster with an exceptional D2 steel blade and under $30.

The 112 is absolutely perfect. Also the 301 (slip-joint stockman).

If you want a modern knife -there are probably hundreds to choose from. For EDC and wood carving -I like the Ontario RAT 1. It is very tough for a liner lock. You can find 'em for $30 shipped. Quality steel too.

+1 to what "leftoverdj" said.

If you can come up with an extra $7.00 the Buck Vantage Pro is one of the very best bargains out there.

A Paul Bos heat treated S30V steel G-10 knife for ~$48 shipped is a great value. Or you could step down to the Vantage Avid that has Sandvik 13C16 steel and Diamonwood handle scales for about $30.

But my favorite EDC knife in my rotation is the Kershaw Skyline for $35 at Walmart.

All these knives are US made BTW, if that is important to you.

Kershaw Barrage
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw OD-1
Kershaw Zing
Kershaw Blitz
Kershaw Skyline.

All excellent choices from Kershaw :D

I like mine! I like the full flat grind, I like the blade shape, I like the liner lock, I like the stainless and I really like the price. I have gotten mine 'shaving sharp' and it seems to perform pretty darn good for a $25 knife. It seems like quite a tough knife and should last well, though if you broke or lost it you could replace it for only $25 so you shouldn't be put off using it whenever for whatever.
