edc knives

I've learned from asking the same question that we need to narrow the field a little bit. Would you like a one hand opener (tactical) or something more traditional? (slip joint)what blade size do you have in mind? What kind of tasks will you be doing? Do you have any type of handle material in mind? etc. Benchmade and spyderco alone produce many very good EDCs. A little more specifics might get you better answers. by the way, WELCOME :D

My personal favorite is the Camillus EDC. It's the one I carry every day, and I own 10 or so one hand folders in that size range. The only thing I've seen that may supplant it any time soon is the Buck Mayo TNT. I played with it at Blade and liked it a lot, but it also costs 4 times what the EDC does. Anyway, that's my reccomendation for under $100 because it's what I carry.

i think im gonna go with the benchmade bm550p griptillian. its made of 440c,it has the axis lock, and its only 70 dollars. one question though, is handle material the actual plastic or wood material, or the inside metal, or is that liner? thanks for the welcoming mark

Benchmades at NewGraham.com

710HS $112.50 3.9" blade in M2
806D2 $106.25 3.9" blade in D2
805 $87.50 3.9" blade in 440C
555 $53.12 2.9" blade in 440C (the mini-griptilian)

Spydercos at NewGraham.com

Military $98.30 4" blade in CPM 440V
Police $82.56 4.125" blade in ATS-55
Native $52.11 3.125" blade in S30V
Endura FRN $45.20 ~4" blade in ATS-55
Delica FRN $41.26 3" blade in ATS-55

Any of these knives will be a great EDC. I have included the two most popular companies, and some of their most popular models, in various price ranges and various sizes. If you can't find a knife you like from either of these companies, you'll have to find someone with way more knowledge than me :D

Next, decide if you want Plain Edge (PE), Combo Edge (CE), or Spyderedge (SE). Not all models come in all edge types (Spyderedge is a Spyderco trait). I prefer plain edge, eventually, no matter what super steel you buy, you'll have to sharpen it. PE is infinately easier than Spyderedge or Combo edge. Look around, find out what you want. These are all excellent knives.

Hope that helps.

Regards,

Shaun.

[edited to add : looks like you posted again while I was posting, mini grip is a great little knife. I have a 555 in PE. Noryxl (or whatever the material is called) is apparently the same stuff VW makes their bumpers out of. There are steel liners within the handle. Very sturdy for a little knife. Cheers! and welcome to the forums]

Greco Knives have sales quite often and you can get one of there folders for under $100. There is NO other folding in that price range with the strength that Greco knives exhibit

Hmm...I'd suggest Spyderco, Al Mar, or Benchmade.

I'd go with the Griptilian or the Spyderco. YOu can easily get a great EDC there for under 100. Good luck! And welcome!

I'll take the lower end of this...I carry a Buck Crosslock Hunter. Carried it for about 8 years and it has treated me very well. Sheath is getting alittle worn.

Just picked up a Crosslock with the "Buckcote" and plan to work it into replacement of my original (if that is possible).

For the price I have paid, I don't mind giving these things a beating when necessary and so far they bounce back fairly well!

Take care!

There are tons from most every maker.

Online, you should be able to get a Benchmade 705, 710, or 735 for under $100. The Griptillian has many pleasing configurations that make it a great choice as an EDC. There may also be a gent folder or two edging just below $100 as well.

Spyderco offers tons of great knives for under $100. The Delica, Native, Meerkat, and Dragonfly knives are my favorite, but there are so many more, including that Military, the Cricket, the
liner-locked Salsa, the compression-locked Titanium Salsa, the Cricket, and several more I missed.

Camillus' EDC in 420HC, 154CM, or the A.G. Russell version in D2 are great choices as well.

Cold Steel makes a bevy of priced-to-own EDC knives. Their Voyager line is the most popular, but there's also the carbon-steeled Trail Guide, the Vaquero family and several others. I haven't found a lower price on Cold Steel brand goodies than at this place.

Many people also find Columbia River Knife & Tool's wares very appealing and cutting edge. Their LAWKS system is great and their new Hawk DOG knife looks promising, too.

Hope that helped.

Best bet would be to spend $125 ($118.95 + s/h) and get a 921 Switchback from New Graham Pharmacy. Second best would be to buy a Delica. :)

I believe that the Spyderco Police, Delica and Endura have been upgraded to VG-10 and have been so for quite a while. The Delica II and Endura II are AUS-6.

My answere to your very subjective question is the Spyderco Delica Lightweight. $34.99 from "knifesite.com".

I prefer the plain edge and I like a short lanyard to help pull it out of my pocket.

Cheers,
Collector

blademan312, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking about the Griptilian, but I'll give it a shot. The Griptilian has two steel liners with Zytel scales attached to them. I've seen it and it's not bad, many here swear by it. I try to avoid Zytel, I just prefer the feel of natural materials or of tougher synthetics. I'm sure you'll be happy with a griptilian though. Look around, you should be able to find it for less than $70 somewhere. Try 1sks.com. Good luck!

The Benchmade 814 Mini AFCK. You can't beat the liner lock. It's the best in the industry. Tough as nails. I own every model ever made except the one in M2 steel.

I have a 551 and it's, for lack of a better term, a tank.

I've even used it to split hardwood shims... don't ask...

No it dosen't hold the edge my 710 HS does, but it sharpens easily and gets a great edge.

I also like the blade shape very much for a general use blade.

in other words, what's in this poor guys pockets...Micra on keychain ($20 @ Target), Spyderco Rescue on l/f right now ($30 from Forum member), Camillus trapper usually in l/f ($26 @ AG Russell), Buck 525 in shirt pocket (traded with Forum member), Buck 110 for days off ($30 @ Wal-Mart), Tinker in bag ($20 @ Target), Opinel #8 in glove compartment ($12 @ local B&M shop). For $100 you could get a helluva nice knife or a couple of good knives. None of mine are big bucks but I'm never without one.

1. CRKT Apache III
2. SOG Singray
3. Sekicut Hiro Little Blue
Thanks, Vassili.

I got a Schrade Old Timer lockback (Schrade+ 440A steel) for $10 at Sports Authority and saw a ton of Opinels for sale online for $9-12. I guess you can get a whole lot for a little.

My very hardly used and abused EDC is a SE Spyderco Delica in VG-10. It is featherweight, has great ergonomics and enough size to keep a low profile.
