who else uses a numbered knife as a EDC, post pictures if you can. im going to start carrying my new preproduction BM 770 osborne to work with me along with my 806d2. i even had a cousin of mine make me two nice leather sheeths for these knives so they wont get scratched up.

my main consern is the blade sence its numbered, so far about the worst things that the 770 has encountered is hair and a plumb. i was wondering if i do scratch or break the blade will benchmade re-etch the number in to a new blade for you? also, id rather have a coated blade, can they coat the blade and retain the number?

Thats a great knife, i had one last year. give benchmade a call , i used to talk to a girl named angie whenever i had a problem' Im sure they will give you the right answer.

As far as I know, they don't. This is only based on my experience with a first production piece, though. It doesn't really make economic sense for them to do so - etching a single blade is probably a troublesome operation, and (strictly speaking) would be a touch deceptive, since it wouldn't be number xxx of 1000 - it would be number 5286 of that model, or some such.

I never really cared about numbers, though - this is my definitions table for "etched" categories, so to speak:

Prototype: Haven't worked the bugs out yet
Pre-production: In the process of working out the bugs
First Production: Looking for the bugs we missed the first time around
Limited Edition: No one's buying the regular ones, so why not make a few in pink?

I'm perfectly happy with my non-numbered blades. If it's value you're worried about, it's really uncommon to see a numbered production knife become significantly more valuable than its non-numbered siblings, provided of course that the only difference is the etch.

I'm carrying a Microtech Terzuola #0614.

Claw-logo stonewashed machine-ground blade... so it's not very pretty... but should hold up well over time. Ti bolsters w/ carbon fiber handle (just like 90% of 'em out there).

It's a nice, solid knife. Kind of non-descript looking, really... everything being matte gray or black. A real sleeper. Its a wolf in sheep's clothing EDC.

I carry a 1 of 125 NICA Limited Benchmade 940TI. It's a winner for sure!

I also carry both my blue and green Bumps. Those were limited to 1000 pieces each IIRC.

Just about every knife I own, I've carried. Less than 5% of mine are what you'd call "safe queens"; I buy mine to use 'em. That includes the numbered ones, the limited editions, the prototypes, the first-runs, the pre-productions... almost all of which are Benchmade, for some reason... ;)

Let's see, off the top of my head: Benchmade 803 TSEK prototype (1/1000), 813S Mini-TSEK pre-pro, 710-01 ltd (brass & winewood, D2, 1/300), 921GRY (grey handles, D2, 1/50) 921PUR (purple handles, black S30V blade, 1/50), 730 Ares pre-pro, and I too have a 770 CF on the way, also a pre-pro... I know I'm leaving out two or three more...

Out of all those, only two don't see regular pocket duty: the 710-01 (no clip, and I don't usually feel like wearing the belt pouch) and the 921PUR (got it by mistake when I ordered a different knife online; saving it for a trade, need to keep it minty). The 921GRY gets carried a LOT; it's just too sweet a user to keep in the drawer!

Let me put it this way: if you don't use the knives you collect, you might as well collect stamps, Hummells or spoons. Knives are tools, they were made to be used. (OK, so "art knives" are another matter, but I can't afford those!)

I have a benchmade terazula, pre production number 9?? of a 1000. I figure with a 1000 knives, how can that be "pre-production" ? and one of a thousand ain't special at all. So I use it like any other knife. Kind of wish the etch wasn't there since it's a small blade and it'd look better w/o the extra words. Most production knives drop 20 % in value as soon as they are used, so any additional worth due to a serial number or "limited addition" can be quickly become meaningless.

That's asking too much, benchmades warranty is excellent the way it is. If you dont want your LE's or pre productions to get all dinged up then don't carry them!

On another note, benchmades etch is pretty good in my experience, the only time i've seen someone without one is because they sanded it off to polish the blade.

I have quite a few numbered knives I carry them all.

Here's two: (I took these when the knives were newer, so they don't show a lot of wear)

Right - #47/100 BM 710 with jigged bone
Left - To my knowledge, one of a kind (I know of another that's serrated). Aluminum scaled M2 blade 710.

The black one is a heavy user and shows considerably more wear than this photo. The bone one is a dressier occasions folder but gets carried on a regular basis, has some scratches on clips now.

Did you get it re-scaled by a custom maker, or did that one come from the factory?

No, these are factory scales. This knife predates Benchmades current LE program. I believe 50 or 75 of the 710's were made with aluminum scales and ATS-34 blades (before BM switched to 154cm).

IIRC this run was done just before they started offering the KOTM (Knife of the Month).

I purchased a separate 710hs (M2) and swapped the blades.

I've seen less of the aluminum scaled 710's come on the market than I have the brass/rosewood one so the actual production numbers could be lower than I've stated, or people are just hanging on to them.
