As part of my EDC, there is always a CamelBak BFM within arms reach. It's got just about anything I could thing of that one could need for minor emergencies. 45 ACP ammo, medical kit, mini survival kit, comfort items........

The only issue is that this bag has made a trip to Iraq and another to Afghanistan. It's looking pretty bad and my wife wants me to replace it with something a little less "ARMY".

Anyone know where i can find a heavy duty leather backpack with tons of pockets?

Thanks in advance,

Berdar

Good question. I have no idea about leather packs but am interested in whats out there.

Why leather I am curious.

How about one of those little backpack purses that were so popular a few years ago. Just kidding. I think leather might not be the best choice, heavy, absorbs water, etc. How about canvas like Frost River. Top quality.

I'd be looking for something more like an adventure racing or light mountaineering pack. Arc'teryx , Gregory, Salomon, or Golite would be high on my list of companies to look at. The Arc'teryx RT series are awesome, IMO. Golite also makes a tactical line, I think.

The Kelty Redwing 3100 fits the bill rather well in my opinion, and it can be had for $70.00 at rei and Gart's right now (for the 2005 version which imho is better than the 2006 version which is selling for $100.00) It is hydration compatible, but you have to get a bladder seperately...I use the 4L platypus.

i agree with 2dogs. check out frost river and duluth. waxed canvas should be nearly as durable as leather, doesn't have that "army" look, and will be water repellent. leather takes forever to dry once thoroughly wet. i have an edc pack that sounds similair in function, and i use an ordinary sheeple-friendly day pack.

Frost River looks really gold plated. I would get somthing that would be comfortable and with more pockets.

Duluth pack makes a nice multi pocket pack called the Wanderer it's a canvas pack with cotton web shoulder straps, if it's any thing like my larger ones it'll take what ever you can give it.

So which is the real deal? Duluth Pack or Frost River? I can't seem to find out how long Frost River has been around.

I believe Duluth Pack is the older of the two companies and I know from experience they back the product 100%.
Last year one of my dogs ate the leather handle off my sparky bag and some of a shoulder strap it took about 4 weeks to have it fixed but it was free!!!
so I picked up another pack for my canoe outings.
I don't know if this is standard service but from years of dealing with mfgs it's
nice to see a company that values repeat business and takes care of a customer.

I'll suggest a half-step.

First, put your CamelBak BFM up on display in honor, somewhere, as an object that helped you to get "there and back," twice.

Then, get yourself another CamelBak BFM. Maybe your wife is objecting more to how grungy its looking, instead of how "Army" it looks...? I won't be the first man to admit to having difficulties understanding women, so this won't be a huge leap, but, maybe the "too Army" argument is for your benefit, an argument that you understand. Women can be tricky that way.

For guys, well, "grunginess" is relative. If something does what it's supposed to do, well, and it may have saved our butts on more than one occasion, we generally don't give a damn if a part of it smells a mite moldy, or has mud or blood stains on it, y'know...? Women are different there. She might not give a rat's arse about how "Army" this or that looks like, but, if you can shake a mixture of Iraqi and Afghani sand out of one corner of one pocket, IT'S GOT TO GO!

Try a half-step. She might be fine with your "compromise." ;)

Another benefit, you already know how to pack it!

Thank you for your service to our country.

Hello,

You could take a look at Marmot. They make great gear. Their Talus and Eiger Packs are great.

Deuter is a good choice as well.

Both are very durable and very comfortable.

Plus not so tactical in appearance but smartly designed.

Thanks Geo,

We had a nice little chat a while ago. I think her biggest issue was the "grung" factor. A green pack with sand colored spraypaint all over it. Lots of stains, velcro for Glint tape and patches, etc. I think the real kicker was the frag holes.

So we've made a compromise. I order a New BFM in black tomorrow. And I don't adorn it with anything "crazy" as she puts it.

Thanks everyone for your input.

So do I, but you know how women can be.
I learn something here all the time! This is a boon to us all! I'm gonna bring out all my grungy stuff until my girl begs me to get NEW. I'll still have my old stand-by AND new backup:thumbup:

THANK YOU FOR MY FREEDOM Berdar.
