Over the past few months, I've become more interested in pens & pencils (like I need a new thing to spend money on). I do quite a bit of writing and drawing at work, sketching layout details, noting and editing plans, taking notes in meetings, etc. As my interest has grown, I have paid closer attention to my writing tools and I am really liking this setup I have now.

In the pic are a few rulers I use regularly, my set of Alvin Draftmatic pencils (.5, .7 & .9), my Zebra 301 and my Papermate Tuff Stuff eraser. The Alvin's are the best mechanical pencils I have used (with the Zebra just behind). The knurled area gives you great control, the lead advance is smooth and consistent and I like the feel of the design overall. The Zebra is a good one as well, metal barrel, fairly comfortable and solid function. The Alvin set was a Christmas gift and I've had the Zebra for almost a year.

For pens, I use Yasutomo Stylists for almost all my sketches and plan mark-ups. Great ink flow and precise lines. They use a hollow tube to supply the ink and I can make very small notes that are still actually legible. For general note taking, I like the Uniball Vision pens in Fine. Good flow from almost any angle and I like the ink. With the Uniball, I can write fairly quickly which is great for fast-paced note taking.

I also carry a Kershaw Tactical pen in my coat pocket. I was surprised at how well it writes and it is also reassuring to have an impact tool that is always at hand (in a low profile package).

What do you guys write with? Carry a pen or pencil as part of your EDC? Tactical pen? Fountain? Expensive? Cheap? How about a notepad (I use a Rhodia 5X5 graph lined pad)?

I always have a pen on me but it's just the closet one to hand at the moment, right now it's one with blank ink, a broken pocket clip and a made in mexico sticker on it :D

I have thought about getting a pen but id' just lose that one to, :p They come and go out my pocket like a magic trick.

I "collect" pens semi-consciously but the ones from hotels and airports and places like that that give them away with there name on it. I have one made form a bullet from Bosnia (more then one I think, but they are scattered around the house like all the others.)

thanks for the info

I switch off between a CRKT tactical pen and a standard fisher space pen. They are both awesome, but completely different

I don't write unless there is no possible method for me to type. And when I do write, I look for an extra-fine-tipped liquid ball pen. BIC and Skilcraft both make good ones.

I use a Zebra F-701, black Fisher Space pen, an aluminum Cross I bought to celebrate when I incorporated, and an older, heavy steel Cross that made the trips to China two times.

I like your style  I carry a Zebra F-701 everyday with a Fisher Space pen refill inside. Writes well and very durable.

I have been meaning to pick up a 701. Did either of you do the mod with the pencil guts?

I think I need a Space Pen too. The County Com pens seem interesting and I for sure need a fountain pen......

Uh oh!

If you're referring to the 'all ss' mod, I've heard of it but mine is stock.

I have a Fisher if I can find it.. but for the last few years in the military until now.. I just carried a humble ol' G2.

Papermate Profile. and I buy about 20 at a time when I do cause I seem to be surrounded by pen thieves! But by far my favorite pen and 4 for $5 ish.

I have a bunch of fountain pens I rotate through... right now I have a Levenger True Writer, Namiki Vanishing Point, and a Roting Core inked. I also use a Think and a Monte Verde roller balls for check writing and such.

I am an art school college student, so I do in fact share the love for the Alvin Draftmatic pencils and the Tuff Stuff eraser sticks. However, I don't usually pocket them for edc; I usually carry them in a small sketch pad kit that I carry on me in an edc bag wherever I go. Normally I always have on me in a pocket either a Hinderer Extreme Duty pen (aluminum, black), or a Fischer space pen in all black.

i love pens and pencils sean. you are bringing back the memories with that Alvin. i took design (architecture, mechanical eng., etc.) classes back in high school. (i used to think i wanted to be an architect). we used to have those old alvin lead holders....the kind where you had to put the pencil in the sharpener that you spin around to sharpen the lead.

i have to say thank you. i actually have fondly remembered those pencils and i could not for the life of me guess what they were called. it was 20+ years ago. but, now i know what to look for. so, thanks.

recently...sadly...my place of employment has stopped supplying us with pens. this was ok because i got to go pick a couple of my own. el cheapos, for sure. a couple of "swank" lookin ultra thin sharpie's and i'm not sure the other. i'll have to get a pic tomorrow at work.

like someone else said...i don't need another hobby to sink money into. but, with that said, i've already checked the usual suspects for those old alvin pencils. ;) :D thanks bud.
