...if you have big pockets that is!

Here are two pics of my Gene Anderson "Madman Knife". That's what I'm calling it anyway. (see story below)

13" overall
5.25" ATS-34 blade

Here's the story:
Gene took a custom order from a man on the east coast , all done by email mind you. The customer supplied the specs, Gene made the blade ,received payment, and sent the knife to it's new home.
Three days later the new owners "Mom" called and told Gene the knife needed to be returned and monies refunded. Gene explained this was a "Custom" knife of an unusual size and would be difficult to resell. The woman then went on to explain her son, the owner, had just been released from a mental institution the previous week and was not allowed sharp objects. Not needing a trip east to give his expert opinion on " Exhibit A", Gene prudently agreed.
I had seen this knife about 8 months ago at Genes and was finally made an offer I could not refuse. I took it to work and needless to say "the boys", mechanics all, were impressed with the mass. Some of the more savvy fellas were quite impressed with the workmanship which is always fantastic. I also took in a couple pound cakes for break time, which the long blade easily sliced up with one pass. Quashed the "whadda ya need that for" question post haste!
By the way, I wear an XL glove.

That thing is amazing. I love large lockbacks and that one is realllly nice. Interesting story as well. Lets see a closed pic too. :)

That's cool Kevin! I got a big 'ole folder sort of like that one. It's not a custom knife but one of the older Western knives that used to be made out here in Colorado. I call it a "Rancher's Knife" because that's what some older and more experienced knife guys called it when I showed it to them.

I do love a big folding knife like that one. Reminds me of a story my brother told me. Lyndon Johnson, while president, had the 'White House tailor' make him some trowsers one time instead of his usual tailor down in Texas. Lyndon had to explain to this city-fied tailor in his usual profane manner that he wanted inserts sewn into his trowser pockets to hold his folding knife, protect it from banging around down at the bottom of his pocket with the loose change etc. I've often thought of doing something like that - perfect for these larger folding knives.

Good idea Buddy. One of my coworkers spouse is a professional seamstress. I may do a pair of jeans that way. I carry this one solo in the right pocket.
By the way , i was going to e-mail you but I'll mention it here for the edification of others. I really enjoyed the article you wrote for the ABS Summer Journal and would recommend it to every "knife guy". Entertaining and something of an eye opener. I wondered where the monkey on my back came from. Now I have the excuse. Thanks for the "couch" time. ;)
Kevin

Thanks Kevin. The summer ABS Journal must've just come out because I haven't even gotten mine yet. Actually I can't remember what this one is about! Must be the one about why blacksmiths down through history have tended to live and work on the fringes of their respective cultures. If that's the one I may have to go into hiding for a while depending on how people react to it!

Anyway, I just realized how whopping big your folder really is. 13" OAL - goodgawdamity! That's huge. I checked mine and it's only 9" OAL. Amazing! You probably have to wear suspenders when you carry that thing in your pocket! Still it's very cool and I love the blade - interesting pattern.

Here's a shot of mine next to a companion Western boot knife which is actually a hair shorter than the folder.
