EDC - Public Defender?

i do carry the pd as my every day carry.

it has its upsides, and its down sides...

the downsides -
1 - tanto edge. when doing mundain cutting tasks, my hand naturally arks upward whenthe cut gets closer to my body, basically allowing me to put the knife out at the desired point. well, because there are two flat cutting edges on this knife, when i curve the knife past the angle of the two, i cut to a point where im going parallel to the cutting material (edge is paralel to cutting surface), so i have to put the knife at a much higher angle then i would have otherwise.... that sounds pretty confusing... im not really sure how to explain it better...

2- thickness (primary grind)... this thing is thick... i mean THICK. you dont notice how thick 3/16 of an inch can be until you bring the grind down close to the edge. this knife is definitely not meant to cut tomato's. when cutting materials, you'll immediately notice how quickly you push them appart as you pass the knife through. a fully flat grind 5/16's blade will seem to cut better then this, even though this is only 3/16.

thickness (directly behind the cutting edge)- the thing that makes this knife feel too thick, is how much metal it has behind the edge. because of that, the cutting performance is really killed... i took the coating off, and brought the angle from what seemed to be about 45 degree's down to 24 degree's, and put a zero edge on it, (wich, i beleive, is when you take most of the metal off of the area behind the edge, so that the ark from cutting surface to primary grind is very gentle). after those modifications, the only problem with thickness is how far you push the material appart.

the benifits -
1 - ULTIMATE POWER!!!!   - there is one thing ive held that feels more stable and strong then this knife - a crowbar. and ill be damned if you can find a crowbar that can cut as well as this (now that its at 24 degree's). this is about the only knife that i would feel safe, really safe, stabing into car hoods with. and i wouldnt hesitate to pry open doors with it, or stab and break out glass. if you want a knife that will never fail you - this one is about the best there has ever been.

2 - tip strength. the tip of this knife goes from 3/16 on an inch thick to the tip in a 1/2". if you can break off the tip of this knife, i'll applaude you for your inginuity (unless you use a clamp and a torch...). while the same goes for the rest of knife being near indestructable, the tipe on this thing is incredibly strong.

so if your going for something that will be with your through the end of the world, this one certainly fits that description. and as far as cutting performance goes, it cuts well, though not suberbly by any means. ive just decided that i want a dedicated slicer, more cutting ability in place of the unlimited strength. busse knives are very stong, regardless of the model you buy, so i figure that even the little active duty tac will stand up to pretty much anything i can throw at it, and as an urban boy, im probably not going to need a knife built like a tank...

as to my bm-e, and my ph, i have no complaints. sure, the new handles will give better grip and a lot of other things, but as far as im concerened, the bm-e and the ph are as good as i will ever need them to be. (thats not to say that i dont want a bm-f and a ph-tac :D )

and welcome to our corner of blade forums :)

one more thing about the pd - safety - when i cant bring my bm or ph - the pd keeps me feeling very safe and sure that if i get into a hellish situation, say, getting stuck under a car, i have something that will get me through it; if it can be done at all. (and it will take the "i dont know what the hell im doing" abuse in a situation like that, say, like stabing a car window when you could just as easily pop it out)

there have been arguments that having hype over a knife being indestructable makes people too cocky, and gets them into things like being in the middle of the rockies with only a knife, straving a dehydrated.

with my knives, its a back up plan for when im too stupid to see im getting into a bad place, not the reason to go there. and the pd is one hell of a back up plan:eek: :D
