A few reasons for folding knives. It's easier to carry, some areas fixed blades can be illegal or not socially acceptable. Just what I can think of off the top of my head.

If you can legally and comfortably carry a fixed blade, more power to you.

An izula might fit your needs.

I was thinking something like Izula too. My reason for not carrying a fixed is that where I live it would tend to get me unwanted attention. Sheeple syndrome maybe.
Also, do keep in mind that in some areas if you do carry fixed it can't be concealed. Anza has some good knives too.

I'll carry a fixed blade sometimes. People nowadays are scared of just about anything sharp. A folder will be low profile, and will most definitely get the job done.

I carry a wenger s10 swiss army knife, good knife with versatility and the blade locks. Of course I have a desk job so my EDC doesn't do heavy work. I did use it tonight to show my daughter how to build a hobo stove and shave a stick to make tender.

Since I bought an izula it's been my main EDC, with either a spyderco delica 4 or an Emerson commander for a folder. I just ordered a Bark River mini northstar for a fixed blade EDC to compliment the izzy.

For landscaping/construction, I'd pick something like a Spyderco Pacific Salt with yellow handles & serrated edge. Or one of the other Salt models with yellow/serrated, depending on preference & blade length restrictions.

However, there are hundreds of suitable knives to choose from, depending on your budget & legalities.

can i hear some good folder ideas?

Only if you provide some sort of framework for us to provide suitable recommendations:

How much do you want to spend?
Do you know how to sharpen a knife efficiently & effectively?
Are there knife laws in your area that would prohibit the carry of a knife with say a 4 inch blade?
Do you need serrations on the knife?
Will you use it for food preparation at all?
Is there any brand you like more than another?

There ought to be a sticky with 'the criteria list'... ;)

Spydercos are a great place to start for folders. They run the gambit on prices, steel/lock/handle options. Their street beat also makes an awesome fixed blade EDC. Many will also suggest kershaw or benchmade, both of which make some awesome knives. I've always been a bigger fan of the quality and function of spyderco though.

I've sold off most of my folders and now carry FBs as my work knife, casual carry, and "dress knife". I've got several small FBs that work very well in those roles and I don't have to worry about loose screws, pivot adjustments, dirty locks, or the other concerns that a folder might generate.

I use an Izula 2 as my daily carry work knife. Works great, it's easy to touch back up with a strop, and it's an easy carry, belt or pocket, in several different sheaths. If I'm dressing up, I've got a BRK City Knife that usually goes with me. Heading out to the woods, I'll take a BRK mini-Fox River for a small knife and a 4" FB from Twin Blades in Statesboro, GA as my large knife. The Izzy 2 would probably work well for you in the roles you mentioned. The blade is 1095, but it's coated except for the cuttng edge, so you'd just have to worry about keeping that clean. If you really want a SS blade because of your work, BRK's neck knife is about the same size as an Izula and it's 12C27 SS.

I started doing that because I've been having trouble with hand and thumb dexterity for the last year or so and folders have gotten difficult to manipulate. Once I made the switch, I found that I liked it and I probably won't switchback even if the hand issues clear up.

Hi mike216 - I'm curious to know if you know what locks are available for folders at all? I think your question from the beginning should have been best folder available for <$60 and then told us you wanted to do yard work and describe what you'd use it for in that job.

Also there's a search box at the top of every forum where you should check before posting and find lots of useful information. Try going to General Discussion and type in something like "good locks."

I did and came up with all of this information http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/search.php?searchid=208651

Now if you have a knife picked out already but the lock appears weak or suspect, then post on that knife. It will get you more detailed assistance. Your questions require answers that are almost impossible to answer. Everyone has about 10 knives they could rattle off as a best $60 folder or we all have locks we prefer over others.

I see you haven't got many posts so welcome and good luck with your knife! I'd advice to find a Spyderco Endura 4 (google it) it has a mid/back-lock to answer you specifically. :)

Hi Mike,

As others have said, there's quite a bit to think about before spending your money on a knife that will best suit your needs. If you're just starting to learn about knives, there's quite a bit of good content on YouTube that will introduce you to the major manufacturer names and will let you see some of the more popular models. Once you find something that interests you, you can always ask more specific questions here on Blade Forums. There are lots of friendly folks around here that would be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you.

Good luck, fella! :)

Hi man,
Almost any folding type from Benchmade and Spyderco.
To be honest, atm I carry the 556 Griptillian and it is extremely good as an edc, you can get it for 50$ and less( if your lucky...).
Im guessing that you dont own alot of knives, so the 556 is a great folder to start with. It is the first knife that a bought, and now after 2 years im carry better knives that costs 300$ ( cuze I need the quality).
So thats my advice.
