I used to carry a Spyderco Manix (original, not the Manix 2). However, i've noticed that they are discontinued, and it's probably my favorite knife, so I'm retiring it to home use so that I don't lose it.

So now i'm looking for a new EDC knife. I have a BM790 and Nitrous Stryker, but both tend to be a bit small compared to the Manix. I'm looking for something with a large (deep) blade and handle, built like a tank, comparable to the manix, but not with a terrible blade shape like the chinook.

Any suggestions?

Do you like cold steel? I've been carrying the new AK-47 for a little while now and for the price and quality its hard to beat IMO.

If you want a slicer with less brute strength look at the spyderco military. ZT 0300?

not a fan of cold steel. i tend to stick with benchmade and spyderco.

then again, it's been awhile since i bought a new knife. i think the last one i got was a BM mini-skirmish and camillus cuda maxx in 2005, that was when kershaw was still IMO crap because they were making speed assist knives in 440c.

I see kershaw now uses decent steels but yeah I've owned a few cold steel knives in the past. Not a fan of their steels. Even the AUS-8 dulls pretty quickly.

spyderco military may be a bit long (4"). problem is i'm moving to chicago. i plan on carrying it with a clip on my pocket, so i don't have to go for the concealed limit of 2.5", but it'd still like to stay in 3.5" or lower just to avoid any unnecessary issues with LEO.

How is the manix 2? also just wondering why it's in 154CM instead of the typical VG-10, i'd probably pick one up but for that fact...

Its nice but not my cup of tea, I'm also not a fan of 154cm unless it has a premium heat treat.

You should really try kershaw/ZT ;)

I've really grown fond of Benchmade knives, especially this year's 755 MPR. I do wonder how they measured it's closed length - and blade length - they just don't agree with my measurements. For example, the OAL they measure is 6.9" - closed is 3.8" - that leaves the blade at a maximum of <3.1" - they list the edge at 3.4"! Roll the edge along a small ruler - it's <2.9" from the full width blade thickness to the tip. Actually, it measures right at the listed 3.4" when measured from the center of the pivot screw to the tip! I wonder how many folks limited to <3" have avoided the new 755 due to that mistakenly listed 3.4" blade length?

Back to the 755 as a pocket knife... wow! Pricey, but quality components - excellent construction quality. Mine has been a nearly constant EDC since I bought it - soon after they were released. I have opened blister packs, reduced cardboard boxes, sliced paper, opened my mail, etc. I have cut some foods with it - not the world's best at small slicing chores in the kitchen - or fine woodcarving. Sharpening/notching sticks is fair use. It still lifts armhairs, so I cannot speak to my Sharpmaker's suitability for resharpening. I have not needed 'more knife' when it was my EDC, either. Not cheap, to be sure, but you could have two for the price of the least expensive version of a small Sebbie.

Since you like BM, have you looked at the H&K 14205? It's gonna be 154CM but I've never had any issues with the one I have. I can't really tell the difference between BM's 154CM and Spyderco's VG10 in everyday use and maintenance.

You might also scout around for a Manix 2 in Carpenter steel. It was a limited run but you might still find one somewhere. A Gayle Bradley could also be a good alternative.

If you like the Manix, you might like the Zero Tolerence 0300 series. It is a modern-looking tank-like brute of a knife. For more traditional looks, check out the Lone Wolf Harsey T2 Tactical. They were discontinued a few years ago but you can still find them. I really like the Micarta handled versions. It's a big knife.

i'm really sad they canceled the original manix and camillus went out of business. the manix and cuda maxx are 2 awesome large EDC knives. i wish i got the bowie blade instead of stiletto.

as for the cold steel ones i feel like they are too "tactical" looking, might get me in trouble with LEO just in case.

after looking around i think i'm going to EDC a manix 2 for now, it's hard to beat for around $75, and see if I can get a good deal on a ZT-300 series.

The ZT 0350 is the one you need.

For that size and criteria, I'd go with ZT 0350, or BM presidio, or BM rift

all built like tanks, all very reputable knives

yeah i got a manix 2 and a military. we'll see how i like the manix 2, if not i'll return it and EDC the military.

if the manix 2 is decent enough, then not a bad deal. even if i do lose it, it's only 70 bucks or so to replace.
