I started a thread about needing an edc. I was carrying a skyline for the past 5 years or so and really liked it, but it was a tick light.

After checking some of the suggested knives and rethinking my wants and needs, I have refined what I would like and need some guidance.

I got ahold of a contego and really liked the over all feel and the blade shape. For some reason, that reverse tanto style has really caught my fancy.

I carry the same knife every single day, so the really aggressive scales are going to be rough on the pocket to the point it is out of the running.

Could someone suggest other knives of similar or slightly smaller size with a reverse tanto blade. Easy open and close. Good steel that is not a pain to deal with in high humidity and wet conditions. Slightly flatter in design like the skyline. It does not have to be that flat, but not overly contoured or thick. Good grip and texture without being so rough it will wear holes through the pocket.

My problem is that I have not found the knives locally to handle. A few benchmades is about it.

The budget is about $250 max. Less is always better if the quality is good. This will be my first higher end folder. I am an idiot about steels. The more I try to learn about those, the more confused I get.

Thanks for the help.

PS. Deeper carry is better. I don't mind a little heft to the knife. I like the flipper on my skyline as it acted as a choil or guard

There are 2 things you should know:

1) if the scales are too grippy on your pocket, you can sand it down to be smoother under the clips "contact point".
2) if the knife doesn't sit deep enough for you, you can sometimes install a titanium "lowrider" clip.

These are common mods many of us do here.

As far as tanto stuff, I cant really recomend any since I'm not a fan of them. However, I'd check out stuff from spyderco, zt, and maybe even consider saving a few more dollars for a small sebenza (those come in tanto too).

Definitely a Rift. The smooth side of the scales won't tear pockets up and the grooves give it a good grip. Rides nice with the split arrow clip that comes with it. Rides just as nice with a deep carry clip as well.

I was looking at one on line. I think I could sand the scales a little to help with the roughness, but if I read it right, that is actually thicker than the contego. Still a nice looking knife!
The contego with the deep clip is sure nice, but it does not look like the rift would be higher than my skyline sat.

Thanks

I was just reading about the sanding. I was also reading that the deep ride clips by bench made might fit as well.

Thanks

Wow. The rift is well liked. I need to find one in stock to handle.

The spyderco southard is on the list. I had seen them on line, but not in person. I think it is offered in multiple steels. I am not sure which would suit my needs best. I have seen the stories of the breaks at the pivot. Is this really an issue?

Edit. Thought 940 was the rift number. My mistake. They both look good.

The Rift is dead sexy. That is a repeat fondler for me. I pick it up *every* time I got to a shop. This habit is why I don't buy it. When I hold it, the lower protrusion on the grip hits my fingers in a weird way that bugs me in a strong hammer grip. For somebody with different hands, it's undoubtedly amazing.

The Southard seems amazing in every way, but I haven't handled one, yet.

I'm digging the 940. I need a deep carry clip myself, but
It's still a great knife. A lot of blade in a slim, light package.

The leek and the task are at the bottom of the length I was looking for, which is fine, but I was trying to go stouter than the skyline. The leek really gains nothing there.

As to the sebenza, I want to see one of these to understand the fuss. I hear amazing things about them.

I think the large would be more what I was after....if the budget would allow, but I still want to see one to understand the fuss. I hear great things about them.
