Hi I'm new to this forum so please have patiens.
I am looking for an every day carry knife. It has to be equally at home in a pair of dress pants with a shirt and tie as well as in a pair of shorts and T-shirt. God forbid I shoud have to use it to defend myself, it should be able to handle that situation effectivly.

I know that from weapons training that under stress fine motor skills degrade. For that reason I should with a little practice be able to deploy it effectivly under extreme stress.

I don't think an automatic is for me, too many things to go wrong. I have looked at a BM 940 & 942. I dont't know much about BM. I have looked at several Spyderco's.

My only limitaions are cost no more than $120.00, easy to deploy, easy to keep sharp with my triangle sharpener, and tough enough to be carried every single day.

So for those of you who don't mind I would really like some advise.
Thank You Keith

You can't go wrong with the BM 94* series of knives. A joy to handle, easy to deploy, even easier to sharpen and good looking enough to carry under any circumstances and tough to boot.

How about a stainless Spyderco Endura II? Those have a "nice-look", and also make a great defensive/offensive folder. Also, they are WAY under you price limit...In fact, along with the Endura II, you can buy a Spyderco Delica to keep the Endura "company", and STILL have money left-over for lunch.;). (PS...The Delica is the "little brother" to the Endura.).

BTW...Welcome to BladeForums!.:).

I'll second Glockman's suggestion. Those SS handle Spydies look very classy in plainedge or full serration.

I can suggest the EKI waved CQC7. You hit the nail on the head about fine motor skills in a hi stress situation. The wave opening requires only gross motor skills and gets the knife open very fast. Going from holstered to open in your hand is a very important step in a self defense. You want to get it out and ready as fast as possible. This knife does it.

For utility it can't be beat. I had been carrying mine as a user/beater since January. Some folks here might tell you a tanto is no good for utility but I tend to disagree. The CQC7b Wave is easy to sharpen as well, you just have to get used to the 30 degree chisel grind.

For looks you might want to go with a plain edge. I owned the part serrated version but only because I didn't want to wait for 1SKS to get a plainedge in. If you want to dress it up sometime down the line, there are several people who do custom mods to it or you can send it to the Emerson custom shop.

I hope this will help, welcome to the forums.

Another vote for Spyderco. The Endura II would be a great choice, and then you could move on to another Spydie, an Emerson, and Benchmade. Good Luck, and welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the Bladeforums, Ktduke. :)

I would like to add another vote for the Endura II, or any other Spydie that may catch your eye. The Spyderco SS models are very stout folders, as well as have a very cool look. Typical hair poppin' sharpness is standard, as with any Spydie just out of the box.

Check out more Spydies HERE

Just my .02.

Good Luck :D

If you decide to buy a tip up carrying Spyderco, you can take a Dremel tool to the opening hole and cut an opening to make your own wave.

I'm not trying to push an Emerson on you, I'm just helping you get a fast deployment.

i vote for the Benchmade 94x. The benchmade knives with axis locks are definitely worth looking into

...Cut open the hole on a Spydie???... That is total sacrilege!!.:p.

Wave Doesnt work well in All types of pants, and if you rotate your EDC's you may find that you are trying to Wave a Sebenza or something silly.

120 bucks, Benchmade AXIS AFCK or TSEK, the 94X's are great but they fall short for SD duty. Also check out the MBC (martial blade craft) class spyderco's: Chinook, Lil'temperance, Gunting, and Ayoob.

Thin and shinny knives have class, but they are harder to hold on to when you really need them.

I dont much care for the Endura or Delica because they are lockbacks. I prefer linerlocks and I enjoyed the BM 940 axis. How about a Spyderco starmate. Its a little large but lite enought??
Thanks
Keith

Welcome to the Forums Ktduke!

The Starmate is an excellent choice for the criteria you put forth. Spyderco has done this folder right. The CPM440V blade is ground thin at the edge and cuts like an amphetamine crazed demon. I'm a major fan of the Starmate and at one time owned three of'em!
I've since traded one away (for a NIB Marble's Trailmaker) but keep one put away in case the horrible day comes that I lose the one I currently have in my folder rotation.

I would also like to suggest you check out Columbia River Knife & Tools folders. My favorite is the M-18, a Kit Carson design he collaborated with CRK&T on. The M-18 has a 3 3/4" drop point re-curved AUS-8A blade, a fairly thick aircraft grade Aluminum handle with colored G-10 inserts(black, red or blue inserts are the options), the Carson Flipper and the LAWKS safety device for the liner lock. This knife is classy looking and tough as nails to boot. It is every day useable and good looking enough to wear with dress up clothing.

All of Benchmade's Axis lock folders are winners to me. You might want to check out the new Axis AFCK. They used D-2 for the blade steel in this rendition of the venerable AFCK. I have one that lives in my left front pocket now.
BTW, I'm also very partial to AFCK's. I have four in different configurations.:D

Best of luck in your search!

All the best,
Mike U.
