EDC Specific Question

I am really into survival knives and gear. Irrelevant, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on knives or steel types for a tough EDC knife. I prefer suggestions pertaining to clip point knives, steel types that hold an edge, trusted dealers, tough locking mechanisms, and knives that work well under pressure. In addition, my price range is around $100. I use a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto as my EDC, but it is becoming impractical due to the Tanto point and steel type. Hope this is specific enough. Thanks!

Spyderco stretch zdp189 fits perfectly. The blade shape is a modified clip/leaf shape, and cuts amazing.

Thanks! I took a look at it, and I'm thinking that I want something with a little bit more bulk to it. I looked at the Zero Tolerance 0350sw and it looks like the perfect knife for me. I'm sort of new to the nice knife world, so I was wondering if anyone had any opinions about this knife.

Does it have to be a folder? What about a small fix blade like esee Izula? I EDC my Folts minimalist occasionally. As far as tough and survival goes, I like small fix blades a lot. I EDC my leatherman as well. The S30V is a great steel in my leatherman charge. The edge holds really good. And the tools have gotten me through a lot of situations.

I have a ZT 0350, and I beat the piss out of it. It is a tough little bugger. If you check out the blems on Kershawguy's site, you should be able to get one for less than your stated budget.

I also heard good things about the ZT 0350 being a workhorse and being able to take a beating and ask for seconds.

Once you go ZT, you're hooked. Just do it! 0550 is my all time favorite, and I have an 0350 and recommend it as well...any ZT will serve you well, though not cheap or light.

Try a blem from Dave (Kershawguy).

One more question... I had a Kershaw Clash before my Recon 1 and sold it. Would that be a inexpensive alternative or does it not come close to the 0350sw?

The 0350's are tried and true. I've had at least four. My older adult son picked an 0350 in S30V INSTEAD of an as-new Sng Strider that I offered him. He did this because the action is so smooth and certain and solid.

Does the steel hold a nice edge because the AUS 8 in the Recon 1 didn't for me?

That surprises me. I have a CRKT with AUS8 and I have had to sharpen it once since I purchased it over 7 years ago. CS is normally really good with their heat treating, so it should have held the edge pretty well.

It could just be the way I am sharpening it. Any suggestions for sharpening AUS 8 and S30V? I just run it across a kitchen knife sharpener which is probably why they don't hold an edge. Then again, I know nothing about it!

The 0350 has a recurve blade. Probably the easiest way to maintain the edge would be a Sharpmaker. I have been pleased with the S30V on my 0350, and you have a lot of info available on this forum in regards to sharpening. There's a bunch of good guys that will be happy to help you out if you go to the Maint. & Tinkering section.
