I had the opportunity recently to remove all of the carpet from my house. I used folding knives to do all the cutting, and there was a lot of cutting to do. Knives used were an Emerson A100 in 154cm, a Spyderco Military in S30V, and a special edition Benchmade in M390. All 3 knives had plain edges, no serrations.
The 154CM Emerson stayed shaving sharp through about half of the room, then quickly became so dull that it was frustrating and required a lot of sawing to get the carpet cut into sections. Sharpening required medium and fine grit ceramic stones and leather strop.
The S30V Spyderco didn't stay shaving sharp for long at all, like a few seconds, but it was working sharp throughout the whole section of the house. Sharpening required medium and fine grit ceramic stones and a leather strop.
The M390 Benchmade was very impressive. After cutting up and sectioning 800 sqft of carpet, it was still hair flinging sharp. I stropped it a bit just because, but it definitely didn't need sharpening.
I could have finished the job with any of the 3 knives, but the M390 is the clear winner. I believe M390 is German steel, is there a US made equivalent of M390?
