Hi Folks - I'm not really a newbie but seldom active on the forum (tho I read it a lot). Matter of fact this may be one of my 1st (if not actually the 1st) posts. I'm 74yrs old & have been carrying a knife of some sort or other since I had to have help opening one. I've amassed quite an accumulation of knives (both folding & fixed blade), mostly older Queens & Parkers with a smattering of Schrade, Buck, Remington, etc. For quite some time my EDC (right front pocket) has been a Japan mfg'd Kershaw Indian Ford & it has served admirably in that capacity. It is relatively easy to sharpen & maintains its edge through some pretty tough chores. Usually carry a trapper, muskrat, stockman, etc., in front left pocket but that ain't the subject of this post. My EDC gets used for everything from peeling/slicing fruit, opening mail, cutting switches, just plain whittling, & general use. Might even hafta skin a squirrel once in a while. ;)

I've recently decided to 'gift' myself with my very first pocket knife that costs more'n 'just pocket change'. I really like the Indian Ford & have decided I'd like to stay with that size/design since I'm comfortable with it. I've pretty well decided on one of the Moki knives in the 3- 3 1/2" range such as the Ares, Fox, Serapis, Kronos, Amaranth, etc. I especially like the steel frame handle of the Fox/Serapis knives with the different inserts. Most of these can be obtained with either AUS-8 or VG-10 steel blades. I've been pretty happy with the performance of the AUS-8 steel of my Indian Ford blade & don't know if the VG-10 is worth the extra $$, given my use of the knife.

I'd appreciate any comments/recommendations from the members here.

Welcome to the forums. I'd look into Northwoods or Great Eastern Cutlery. Both are very nice. GEC makes some nice single blade pocketknives, I've had great fit and finish on them and it's hard to beat good old 1095 done right. Happy hunting.

Hey youngster, welcome to the Forum. Just think, if you'd be nice enough to write us again, you'll double your posts. Not many of us can say that.
Sonnydaze...once a resident of El Dorado. Nice state.

VG-10 is a bit better than AUS8, from my non-scientific experience. I'm quite fond of VG-10, I find it to be a nicely balanced material for my EDC folders (and even some small or medium fixed blades).

If you can track one down (I think they're out of production), get a Kershaw Gentleman's Folder. It's a lovely lockback, with excellent fit and finish (made in Japan), a 3 1/8" VG-10 balde and micarta handles. It's very slim in the pocket.
