Hello Guys,

I'm new to the folder side of things but with my job it's easier to carry one than a fixed blade. I ordered a Dragonfly with the G-10 scales for the fiance, figure its small enough for her to carry daily and forget its there. I also picked up a Military off the exchange last night for myself. I feel this may be to large for an on-installation carry knife, so my question is this: What smaller Sypder will fill this role the best? I have held a few with the plastic handles and don't want anything to do with those, so G-10 or along those lines is a must. Would another Dragonfly do me good or should I move on to the next size up (Delica, right?). I also looked at the mini-grips but the ones at REI all had some blade play.

*Note: Rule of thumb on a military base is normally the blade has to be smaller than the width of your hand.

Sounds like a good fit for your needs, would be the Native 5

As stated above, native 5, sage series. Also look at the manix line, caly line, gayle bradley, paramilitary 2 (if you can find one for a reasonable price), police and super leaf. But go with what catches your eye, spyderco won't let you down.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies! So I'm looking these up and the G-10 models are HARD to find, any clues?

Well that Native 5 is G-10 as well as the Tenacious.

dc50,

The Tenacious is using a lower end steel, I don't have any history with the 8Cr13Mov. How does it compare to the VG-10 (seems to be the benchmark for all Spyders?).

It wont hold an edge as long as VG-10 but it is very easy to sharpen and will take a very sharp edge. Its not the best for rust resistance.

A Caly 3 would also probably be a good fit. They are available in couple of different scale materials including G-10 and CF, as well as multiple steels including VG-10, Super Blue, ZDP-189, and Damascus. They are solid as a rock and good workers that probably won't scare people.

I'd pick the Caly over the g-10 Delica. I haven't handled the g-10 delica though, only the frn one, but I much prefer the Caly and the price difference won't be as big compared to the g-10 one.

A Military tends to carry vary well, the size will shrink after a few days in your pocket. My second choice is a Manix 2 with a FFG blade.

Chaparral in CTS-XHP or maybe a Paramilitary 2? Like others have said, the Sage series is good too.

In order of smallest to largest:

Dragonfly (try our your fiancé's since its available and see if it works or not).
Sage or Chapparal series.
G-10 Delica (disc., may be hard to find) = Caly 3 or 3.5 = Manix 2 = Superleaf or Superhawk (both disc.) = Yojimbo 2.
Stretch = Paramilitary 2.

Non-Spydies:

Kershaw Skyline, Piston, Half/Full-ton, etc. Benchmade Grips are very light and have good quality blades, but their handle construction is not the strongest. CRKT has some new options out recently that MAY interest you.

You could also just ask for clarification from the MP's stationed on your base. Or ask to see the codes regulating carry of such tools.
That way, you get to enjoy, legally, the beauty that is the Military.
