Dear cultrophiles,

Can anyone please recommend a single-blade multi-use/utility folder, with a blade that is less than or equal to three inches (definitely not longer than 3"), for EDC? I would prefer be easily opened with one hand, such as an assisted opening mechanism, but it's not necessary.

I would prefer it be less than $100 but I'd go up to $200 if it was definitely worth it.

The only other stipulation is, I'm not crazy about jigged or bone scales.

Hope you can help!

Thanks in advance,

Derek

For use in the UK, so non-locking?

Spyderco makes one for the UK:

Not sure there would be an assisted opening knife that did not lock. BladeHQ's search doesn't list any. Assisted opening catches everyone's attention at first, but (as you can see from videos on Youtube) a well designed, well built folder doesn't need an assist for easy one handed opening.

A thread on this at another forum - UK Legal one hand opening knives:

UK dealer's site may give you browse for what you'd like - there's a "UK Carry Friendly" choice in the filters along the left:

I would recommend the following:
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Cryo II
Enzo Birk (non-assisted)
CRKT Endorser

For EDC I would stay away from auto-assist. More parts that attracts dirt and can cause problems. They barely contribute with any real advantage. The only real application is to play with them in front of the TV.

For non-locking then the UKPK would be king, pick a shape you want, and it will do what you need it to. I have the spy-dk which is very similar just without the large hole for one-handed opening, and I really like it.
If you want a locker, then I'd go for a benchmade 555hg (mini griptillian) for a general purpose EDC do everything blade, I don't think there are many better.

assist openers are kinda fun, but you are spending a lot for a feature that you don't really need.

Since he specified ≤3", the only one of those that fits his criteria is the Leek—but that happens to be my recommendation as well.

Deke, is assist all you want, or do you also want it to be a flipper? Or, for that matter, how about a flipper without assist?

Fortunately (depending on where you live, I guess), most modern EDC knives are one-handed opening, so you have a vast array of options there. No flipper or assist needed. And you can't go wrong with a Spyderco.
