Microtech mini-socom is probably the best, up there with the Benchmades. Since I can't remember any of those darn numbers, I won't comment. Microtech's tolerances are second to none, and the finishes on the those knives are almost divine. Oh, MODs have similar tolerances also, so you'll find some fans of those also, CRKT, Kershaw are lower priced knives that are good, but not as good, after all you get what you pay for. As far as Spydercos go, they are really excellent, but the quality varies a fair amount between models.

ok heres the list in my eyes:

1) bm 940 - benchmades are pretty good ive heard
2) microtech mini-socom - heard its a great knife, but microtech's customer service are the PITS! so if your knife breaks, or doesnt function well, thats your prob.
3) bm 710 - benchmade
4) emerson mini-comm - HAHAHAHHAAHA i think there are only a few emerson fans, read some reviews
5) mod cqd - i think theyre a good company
6) spyderco military _ YES! what a knife!! read buzzbaits review on this baby!! this is a BEAST of a knife.
7) bm 721 - benchmade
8) kershaw avalanche - donno about this knife, Kershaw's customer service IS the best, they fix for no charge they reply within the day
9) spyderco native s30v - YES! good knife, well known, PROVEN
10) cr crawford kasper - i donno what that is, is that CRKT? theyre allright, but dont be expecting spyderco or benchmade or MOD quality from these guys.

Don't know about all of them but the MT Mini Socom is an outstanding knife for an EDC. The 940 is a great knife and I love the reverse tanto style blade but the blade is about 3.5" and a little long for some people that work with a lot of sheeples. The 940 also has a handle that is a little thick for some. You need to handle one for yourself.

At one time or another, I've owned almost all the knives on your list, and the only ones that have remained in my possesion and EDC rotation are the Military and MOD CQD I.

The Military is the perfect EDC knife, flat, light, strong with good steel and a useful blade shape. A Military has always been in my EDC rotation (the only knife to do so), since I got my first one in 1998. You can't go wrong with this knife.

I EDC the CQD once in a while, but the knife handle is a little fat for me, and the placement of the pocket clip on the knife (over the cutouts in the handle and near the grip tape) tears the hell out of my pants pockets. It may seem like a difficult knife to carry, but the clip is positioned so that a good part of the handle sticks out of the pocket. This may be good or bad, depending on how you feel about it. I love the CQD, but it's a little too much knife for some situations.

The Benchmades are OK, just a little too small for me.

You can find a lot of info on the Emersons on this forum. Many of us have been disappointed at the low quality/price ratio. I owned 5 Emersons at one time (Mach I, PSARK, Karambit and 2 Surefire CQC-8s) and I currently only own one, the CQC-8.

As for the CRKT Crawford/Kasper, if you get the Pro model, with the dark gray aluminum handles (as opposed to last year's tacky silver handles), I think that you are getting a good value for your money. The CRKTs are very well made, the CQ is high and the prices relatively low. I'll get flames for this, but I believe that the CRKT knife is 70% or so of the real thing, at about 1/8th the price.

One knife you didn't mention, that should definitely be on your list is the MT/Lightfoot LCC. The manual ones are currently trading in the $120 - $140 range (I just got a Gen I for $118), and they are the best built knives that I have seen, not to mention one of the best looking.

Have fun on your new hobby, hope you have an understanding wife/girlfriend. :D

I've handled and owned a few of the knives on your list.

The BM 940 is a nice knice. I had to get rid of mine because I have large hands and the handles were too slim and narrow. Other than how it felt, it was a solid performer.

The Microtech Mini-SOCOM looked really nice. I never actually owned one, but I seriously considered buying one and looked over it very closely at the knife store. The tolerances on that thing are very tight. However, it might be kind of small if you have large hands. I really liked the full sized SOCOM though, but I think those are discontinued.

The BM 710 is one of my favorite knives. It feels great in my hands and it just works. Simple as that, IMO.

I had a full sized Commander which felt really great. My only beef with it (and other Emerson knives) was the very thin liners and unreliability of the locks. For those reasons, I got rid of mine. Didn't get to use it much, so I can't say how it performs.

I had a Spyderco Native at one time, but it wasn't the S30V model. However, this knife is one of my favorites as well. It fits my hand really well and I especially like the extra finger choil on it. It's very sheeple friendly, IMO, and the blade shape is great for a variety of tasks.

2) microtech mini-socom
It is my understanding that Microtech is halting production of manual knives and concentrating on autos (correct me if I am wrong here)...in any case, they make a great product (sharp as heck too)...I love the full size SOCOM but the mini is WAY too small for me

4) emerson mini-comm
I have a full-size Commander...although I love Emerson customs (handmades), I am not a big fan of their production line...IMHO, this is not on par with Microtech

5) mod cqd
My favourite production folder (I'm considering Strider semi-custom) this was my EDC for about a year...everything about it appeals to me

10) cr crawford kasper
I have a custom framelock from Pat Crawford but I have handled the production version may times...IMHO, it is a great buy for the price...I still prefer the CQD or SOCOM though (again, if we are talking about production pieces)
