Hey Joe! I just bought a mint condition set of the french green Master Series over-runs (a 192, 119 and 110). Is it possible to have them upgraded to the Edge 2000 grind? I read something about a coupon elsewhere on this forum in a post that mentioned a five dollar price for the grind work - update me/us on what's actually required! I'd like to get these as sharp as the 2000 532's I have.

Best,
Billy

pup,i think joe is out of town till next week
there is a coupon required for the e2k makeover. im still looking for the posting.
something else , check your knives, they may
already have been edged. i believe the overruns may have been done in 99,at which the edge 2000 was standard.i have a 119 overrun and compared it to a 119 buck custom
with stag and the 119 green definatly has the
new edge.just some thoughts..

Hi Pup,

I've got one of the 110 overruns, (got it NIB
from a dealer), and it already had the Edge
2000 grind. Take a close look at the edges on
your knives. Do they look polished or do they
have a more coarse look to them? If they have
that coarse look to them, that's Edge 2000.
If not, send them back to Buck to have 'em
updated. If you need coupons, e-mail me your
address and I'll send you a few...got five
new Buck's for Christmas and each has a
Edge 2000 coupon along with it, so if you
need them, let me know.

Yep. They all came with E2K. No need to send them back for that.

You were lucky to find the 110. I ran out of them a long time ago and I had a lot of them to start with. I still have some 119s and 192s though. They didn't go as fast as the 110s did.

I did manage to keep one for myself. That doesn't always happen. I planned on keeping one of the BG42 Striders for myself and one of the guys who works at Buck Knives, in their store, came in and talked me into selling it to him. Seems they couldn't get them and I had the last one in San Diego.

I will keep one of the Strider Juniors and a Spearpoint though. I made sure I ordered enough to do that this time. 20 wasn't enough with the tanto.

THANKS to everyone who responded with info and offers of coupons - this forum is tops for friendliness and facts. I've examined the blades on my French Green set and sho'nuff they are E2K compliant - I could not be more pleased! Dennis I am curious as to what you judge the current fair market value of an overrun 110 to be at this point.

Best,
Billy

Further question - are there any reliable estimates of the numbers of overruns released? I've seen e-Bay auctions stating numbers like eighty five pieces for the 192 and wonder if that could possibly be true?

Pup, it's tough to judge the FMV of the 110's. While there weren't that many made, the wholesale price from Buck was low enough that I could sell them at $69.00 and make a decent profit. OTOH, there was at least one moron out there on the web GIVING them away free. I don't know what he was thinking but, whatever it was, it tends to drag down the overall value, at least in the short term.

Personally, from a strictly utilitarian point of view, judging against other knives as well made from the same materials, with the same guarantee, I would put a practical value of over $100.00.

That doesn't necessarily reflect the actual market value, though since there are a lot of folks out there who don't go by anything other than what they think they can get for something.

As far as the numbers of Vanguards made, it was higher than 85. I don't remember the exact numbers I saw on the availability list when I first ordered them last year but I seem to remember that it was somewhere between 200 & 300.

I know I placed and received 3 separate orders for them before they ran out. Each order was for half a dozen knives and they came in right away.

Toward the end, Buck was making them as they were ordered. It didn't take long before all the parts were gone. As I said, I don't know, for sure how many they had, to start, but it was way more than 85.

I was amazed at how fast they sold at $149.95. These are awesom knives. I wish Buck would add them to the regular catalog.

How about a comparable 110 from PCKS?

The price for a 110 with Indigo Royalwood, nickle silver bolsters and a BG-42 blade is $88.00.

I don't see any real premium on the over-run
knives...yet. They are just too new. Put them away for a few years and you may have something. On the other hand, you have three knives that will perform wonderfully in use.

If they were mine, I'd put 'em away. But they are not mine. If you want to use them, go right ahead and do so. That is what those knives were made for.

Take care,

The difference, of course, is that the green over-runs have the words "Master Series" on the tang. Purely in terms of function the PCKS knife you described is identical to one of the 100 MS overruns - and as I paid $100.00 for mine, the PCKS is a better deal (excepting the delivery time issue). Whether the tang stamp eventually brings a premium is speculative and, even in the 'best' case, the return won't beat a T-bill or mutual fund.... But there is the intangible pleasure of owing some minor quirk of Buck history and to me that's worth an extra twelve bucks. The BG42 192 is another story - blades that size in BG42 are just NOT common yet. I have a Schrade Lake/Walker folder in BG42, the Buck over-runs, and the Buck 2000 532 - none of them compare to the 192. THAT piece is a stunner and, so far, utterly unique. What's funny is that the 192 is the one I am most tempted to use as a skinner - tomorrow (New Year's Day), in fact, if the hunting gods smile on me!

I just did a search on the old computer and came up with the following quantities:
192 94
119 244
110 178
These are the ones with the smooth French green handles.

Wow! That's much lower than I would have guessed. Thanks for taking the time to do that bit of reseach, Joe!
