I HAVE A BUCK NIGHTHAWK MODEL 650 WITH AN INVERTED U, INDICATING MANUFACTURE IN 1997.
THE BOX LABEL HAS B650-BB-O AND AN "EDGE 2000" STICKER. HOWEVER, THE BUCK CATALOG, PAGE 3, STATES, "ALL BUCK BLADES MADE SINCE EARLY 1999 WERE EDGED WITH THE NEW EDGE 2000 PROCESS". SO, DOES MY KNIFE HAVE THE EDGE 2000 ?

Ford,
First off i would like to welcome you to the forums!
The knife you have does sound interesting. We did not start Edge 2000 until late 1999 like the catalogue said so it is strange that your Knighthawk came in the box it did. It is possible that it got put into a diferent box at the store. It is very hard to tell, especially with a 650, if the knife has the Edge 2000 treatment. I would recomend that if you do not like the edge, you can send it in to us and i will have it thinned out some and given the edge 2000. I wont charge you for this service.
Otherwise, if the edge is to your likeing, i would only suggest that when you sharpen it, match the factory angle.
Hope this helps,

THANKS FOR YOUR OFFER. I WILL SEND IT BACK IN TO YOU. ACTUALLY I AM PLEASED WITH THE EDGE, BUT I AM CURIOUS. IF YOU DETERMINE IT HAS EDGE 2000 JUST SEND IT BACK; IF NOT, PLEASE HAVE IT PUT ON.
INCIDENTALLY, GREAT SERVICE SUCH AS THIS, AND EXCELLENT PRODUCTS ARE WHY I HAVE BEEN A BUCK CUSTOMER FOR OVER 30 YEARS.

I would greatly appreciate a brief explanation (or a pointer) of what this "Edge 2000" is.

Thanks!

Ford,

I checked your Knighthawk and it is Edge 2000 compliant, with an included angle averaging 28 degrees. Since it has a date code from 1997 i can only summize that it was a blade made in 1997 but not made into a finished knife until around 2000. If it were not for the edge 2000 sticker on the box i would have jsut said it was a coincidence that the angle was in the proper range. You can tell be the rougher finish of the edge though.
I hope this helps.

Rhino,
Edge 2000 represents a change in the way we do our edges at Buck. The edge is wider which makes it easier to resharpen because you can see it better. We also use a hard leather wheel as apposed to a soft cotton wheel to remove the burr which minimizes the chance of rolling the edge over. We also have a tighter range now for the included angle of the edge-26 to 32 degrees.
Take care,
