Edge Angle On Emerson Folders

I am a tactical knifemaker myslelf and I carry a Emerson folder with the wave feature. I noticed that the knife is beveled normally on one side and very little on the other cutting edge. Why is that? I never could get the knife to get razor sharp like that. Am I doing something wrong or does anyone else has this problem? I reground the edge and it has been slicing and cutting excellent ever since. What is the advantages to only sharpening one side? Thanks for everybody's help.

Don't know what to tell you on the edge angle. I have no idea.

I can tell you that all EKI products are "Chisel Ground" for the final sharpening, even the "V" ground blades like the Commander.

This edge may not feel "razor sharp", but the chisel edge is very, very "flesh aggressive".

Here's EKI's sharpening instructions.

Having said all that, I have recieved and have sharpened EKI knives to the point that they shave hair with zero problem. (Remember, razor blades are chisel ground also) :D

I read somewhere that it's 25degrees. It was sometime ago therefore I don't know how good the infrmation is. I sharpen my CQC7B and wifes CQC7A at 25 degrees. It offers an extremely sharp edge that will shave hair clean off without any effort or force and will last a good while. I've tried everything from 10-40 degrees on other chisel ground cheapy knives and found 25 degrees to be the best all around performer. Hope this helps.

i've not had luck on my minicomm, but i'm a novice at this.

i've actually got a question:
when people say "30 degrees", is that 30 degrees off the vertical (for a 30-60-90 triangle), or is that 30 degrees between the two sides (in the case of a non-chisel ground edge), making it 15 degrees off the vertical?

I don't know, but I measured the angle of the edge on my CQC7A. I used the back of the blade as the base of the angle and the spine or flat portion of the blade as the side, then measured the edge. The edge came out at 50 degrees. So that means If I used a clamp knife sharpener, I would have to set the stone at 50 degrees to match the factory edge. Do they make one with that large of an angle?

According to the sharpening instructions which are coming with each Emerson folder, the spear point blades are sharpened at 25 degrees and the tanto blades are 30 degrees. So, make sure the angle which you use to sharpen is not smaller than 25 resp. 30 degrees. You can take a somewhat bigger angle (just a few degrees) so that you really sharpen only the edge.

Good luck.

Sal (no kidding att all...)

Hawkins,
Using the term "included angle" is a good way to avoid confusion when discussing these matters. In a nutshell, the included angle is a single measurement that accounts for both bevels. Thus if the right edge bevel on your blade is 20 degrees off the vertical, and the left edge bevel is 25 degrees off the vertical, then the included angle for that particular blade is 45 degrees.

Spel,
This will certainly work, but keep in mind that over time (with successive sharpenings) your edge will become progressively more obtuse. Another technique which you may have seen discussed here is to take a laundry marker and blacken just a portion of the final edge bevel. You then adjust your sharpening angle until the stone evenly removes the ink. At this point you'll know that your sharpening angle is exactly matching the edge bevel angle.
