well i must say i have been away from the grinder for 2-3 years but to day i tryed out my new 9" disk grinder and it works sweet. so i grabed a old file and started shapping. after i got the shape i liked, i started the edge bevel wich started good but got harder and harder to keep straight as i made it wider. i must say i think this is the first time i have tryed gringing a hardened file into a knife. i have used files before but i remover most of the hardness. could that be my problem that the metal is so hard it does not cut real good?

The larger the surface area you are grinding the harder it gets to remove material. In addition you are grinding hardened steel so your abrasive will dull exponentaly faster. Pushing a piece of steel against dull abrasive does very little stock removal and just generates a lot of friction heat.

well i bib remove most of the heat treating by puting the blade on the stove and turning on the burner to high. i left it there till the blade glowed with a faint red. i then turned off the burnner and left the blade there to cool, so it cooled real slow. i now can cut into the old file with a file so it is a lot more soft now. i think that was my problem as whit a fresh disk it would cut great for around 1-2 min but then would start getting quite hot with less sparks.
