I'm thinking about buying a completely unsharpened Khyber knife/short sword. The whole "unsharpened" part doesn't bother me, as I'm within walking distance of Santa Fe Stoneworks (they do great knife/blade customizations) and they charge bare minimum prices for grinding/sharpening.

I was wondering though, what type of edge grind should I request for this thing? Saber? Convex? Flat? Hollow?

I'm not that educated when it comes to edge grinds, so help would be appreciated.

also...When it comes to the steel of this knife, I have no clue....just says "carbon"

In the past I have been given unsharpened knives from India that were purely ornamental. They were made of a low carbon steel and chrome plated. When I sharpened them it exposed how different the overlayed chrome was from the carbon steel inside. It was unsightly, particularly with a wide bevel (such as you would get by convexing the edge). They would not hold an edge since the steel inside was low carbon.

These days you may find that an unsharpened piece is made from a low carbon stainless steel that will not hold an edge. You won't have problems with the sharpening looking bad, but the blade will be a disappointment. It may not only not hold an edge well it may also bend easily. If it is made from cheap steel I would have a convex edge put on it since that will be the strongest type.

Always investigate carefully any knives that are sold without an edge. They may be designed to be wall hangers.
