Edge geometry on the GB?

Is the edge geometry on the GB anything like the Buck version? I saw a Buck the other day at the knife shop and the tip/edge was extremly blunt and thick. I pressed my finger on the tip section firmly and slid it right across with no fear of being cut! Is it supposed to be like this for prying and other hard uses? I want to get an AR or GB and I'm hoping it will shave right out of the box!;) What do you experts think?

If you did that with my new GB, you would have a seriously filet-ed finger:eek:

I think it has to do with a knife made for the masses.
Liability concerns? Who knows....
But how can you worrie about that type of liability when dealing with a knife? Ahh screw it, who knows....

Could it have to do with making so many of the knife in a automated process, not being able to sharpen by hand?

I have my GB in hand now. I wouldn't run my finger across either edge without drawing blood. Don't know about the Buck version but I would think that both edges would be sharp. The real thing is rock solid and sharp as hell and I havn't sharpened it since I chopped up some split rail fence with it. EC

Skag,

I thing I recall Duane and/or Mick saying in the magazines that the Buck/Strider tanto tip is designed to be thick for penetrating strength and prying power. They wdecided to design for toughness over a sharp front part. It looks liek the Buck/Strider tanto top wpuld take way more abuse than a tanto from Benchmade.

I'm on my second AR and yes FEAR would prevent me from doing that same test, lol There's no doubt in my mind that edge would put me in the ER :)

This is good to know! I plan on getting a GB at the Blade Show and I have not had a chance to hold one so I'm glad it is sharp unlike the Buck. Thanks again for the input!:)

I dont know about the new flat grounds, but on the older hollow ground GB's, including mine, the leading or front edge was intentionally left at a high angle for utility and strength for such things as piercing and prying and scraping. It was the same edge as on the fixed blade BT, WB, and EB T's. Like I said they may have changed the newer models to fully sharpened though. One of the Guys will probably chime in with the correct answer, but dont knock the older way, you still get a sharp edge with the ability to really abuse the point and tip without fear of breaking, and if you want a knife to skin or dress game with then get a small spear or drop point, or the AR, but for utility, the GB rocks, carry mine everyday.
