Edge Geometry

I started reading the advantages of convex and started getting dizzy from all of the opinions. That said, I'm going to give it a shot on my BK7 and see how it performs. First I reprofiled to about 21 degrees then am taking the rest by hand. I'll let you know how it turns out.

20 degrees should be sufficient for a razor edge on any non stainless carbon steel.
Maybe even a bit to steep for hard uses

I used to have mine at 20 degrees with a 220/600 norton followed by a 1200grit japanese waterstone and finished with good ol' stropping - held a nice razor edge for most chores, but when it came time to baton through some densely grained wood, it lost it's edge...

So I decided to convex mine just before a 3 day camping trip (220, 400, 800, 1000, 2000 girts and a mousepad). I did a ton of chores with it (hacking small branches and saplings, carving, food prep, batoning, etc) and although it didn't shave by the end of the trip, all it took was a quick pass on the strop to bring it back to a razor edge.

I'd say that convex knives are definitely the way to go for survival/heavy use. You can even bring a chopped down mouse-pad/600grit sandpaper + your leather belt in case you need to resharpen it while in the field (a lot less space and weight than a stone).

Pics (the lanyard is adjustable and the two balls adds to the masculinity factor :p):
