Edge getting sharper with use?

I've been running my Benchmade bone collector D2 for a few weeks, and it seems that the more I cut with it, the sharper it gets. When I first got the knife, the factory edge was pretty underwhelming, but it seems to be sharpening itself now. It's gotten to the point where its actually starting to feel like a razor edge.

Normally I check my knives with a loupe, I didn't on this one, but I wish I had so I could at least have some hint as to what's going on.

The only thing I can think is perhaps there was some kind of micro-burr on the factory edge, that has been knocking itself off as I use the knife. I've never had this happen on any edge that I've sharpened myself. They usually start at max sharpness and go downhill from there.

I'd tend to agree with you on the micro bevel thing.
D2 tends to hold an edge for a long time, but can be difficult to sharpen.
Perhaps whoever sharpened it at the factory wasn't totally familiar with D2's
sharpening characteristics.
But wouldn't it be great if all knives self sharpened?

i have'nt experienced this phrenomon myself but after abrading original edge & resharpening to my own bevels i have several knives that seemed to increase in edge holding. whether this was a factor of micro burr or the change to a more efficient bevel i have'nt substantiated.--dennis past bevel change videos by Unit seem to certainly prove that good mirror bevels really improve cutting & edge endurance.

You, you could be putting microserrations into it, which would feel sharper, and would cut very well with pullcuts. I am no metallurgist, but I know that D2 has large carbides, so you could be wearing away the steel matrix and further exposing the carbides, which are helping you cut

Either that, or you had a wire edge, and broke it off

Edit: since it was the factory edge, you probably didn't have a wire edge

I'm not really going to venture a guess as to why this happened, however I have had knives come from the factory with wire edges. Busse and Benchmade both.

It's not commonplace, but it does happen. That's the difference between production and custom. I'm not talking about full wire edges here, but certainly parts of the blade where there is still a remaining burr that falls off with use. It's why I generally sharpen all my knives aside from most spydercos right when I get them.
