Between the Grohmann/Russell # 1 Canadian Belt Knife with High Carbon German Stainless and the Buck #112 Ranger with 420 HC Stainless which will hold a better edge? I Really appreciate any thoughts on these two steels.

There are many things that effect edge holding, aside from the steel itself, such as heat treatment, hardness, blade geometry, how the knife is sharpened and used, what materials are being cut, etc.

IF all of these were the same, Grohmann’s 4110 steel (which is similar to 440A) should hold an edge slightly longer because it has a little more carbon and chrome plus some molybdenum - all things which tend to increase wear resistance. If the knives were the same, you would probably not notice much of a difference.

420HC by Buck is heat treated per Paul Bos. He takes an ordinary SS, treats it right and turns out excellent blades. I haven't had any blades in 440A or Aus6 that take and hold as good an edge as Buck 420HC. I have 8 or so Buck's but I would not trust 420 by anyone else.

I doubt if you can make much of a meaningful comparison here. The geometries of these knives are way different. The Grohmann has a longer edge length, so maybe its sharpness will outlast the Buck, simply because of that! If you are trying to choose between these 2 knives, I wouldn't go by steel. The geometries will be a mich more deciding factor here. And the whole fixed vs. folding thing too!

lately I have been getting back into Buck knives. I always thought 420 sucked, but then I never knew how to sharpen, now that I know how to sharpen steel is not as big of an issue as before.

I'd go with Buck but you have got to feel the knife in your hand.
