Does anyone have any info on Queens edge holding for their D2 pocket knife blades. Is the heat treat good on these knives. I was also looking at GEC 1095 steel for a pocket knife. Any info would be appreciated.I have a older Case in stainless that I feel just does not hold an edge very well,I use my pocket knife everyday for general use and not abuse. Thanks

You will notice a big difference between Case's Tru-sharp and Queen's D2 in regards to edge retention with the D2 coming out on top. Queen's D2 HT is by Peters' Heat Treat Inc. and is very well done.

Yup it may take a bit of effort to get a good edge on that Queen D2 but once you do it holds it nicely. GEC's 1095 is good steel as well.

Yeah, edge holding is great...sometimes their factory edges are not so sharp, but once you get a good one on it it'll hold it.

queens d2 is easier to edge with diamonds. i prefer gec 1095 for a finer edge but the queen after losing it's super sharp will hold a decent cutting edge for a very long time. case is shaded by the d2 & the gec 1095. yesterday i bought a large case s.s. tooth to carry in my fishing pack, if they have improved much i'll let the guys know.---dennis

It's funny you say that Dennis cause I went to town on a new Queen Abalone #46 with some diamond stones on my Sharpmaker just the other day...I'm not done yet :o:D It's some tough stuff...and I'm not a world class sharpener.

I have a Queen country cousin, sharpened by Kwackster. I've been edc'ing it for a few months now, it does not see any real abuse, but I'm very much satisfied with it's edge holding. I do maintain the edge with some stropping.

Queen D2 is head and shoulders above the steels used in most production slip joints in terms of wear resistance. If I have a lot of carboard to cut, I often turn to a Queen Congress: four thin blades of D2 last a long time.

I put new edges on it with a DMT extra course--didn't take long with diamonds.

sometimes it's necessary to relieve the bevel to get a decent slicing edge . sometimes i set a new bevel with the edge pro & other times on lots of metal involved i go to a belt powered lo-ray. then i go to the dmt diamonds & the spydie hones. really no set process' depends on how severe the bevel needs cutting back & also the alloy involved. triple tempered s30 is going to be much more work than 1095.--dennis

I have to agree with Dennis. Queen's D2 will hold an edge for a long time while GEC's 1095 is easier to sharpen and takes a little finer edge. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one, it just depends on what you're looking for. Both of these are quality steels and each would be an upgrade in edge holding from Case's stainless.

I just got a Queen large stockman and I put a new set of bevels on the blades. The factory edges on mine weren't very good. The D2 takes a lot longer to sharpen than good 1095. Based upon my experience sharpening the steel, the D2 should provide a very durable edge.

the D2 should provide a very durable edge

Your assumption is correct. I have diamonds and Norton stones available but if I was using an old soft arkansas and got a really dull Queen I'd probably get frustrated enough to go buy diamonds or power equipment. :) I bought my first Mountain Man Lockback and the fit and finish was excellent. It sold me on Queen. I found out sharpness was hit or miss ( it's getting better now IMO).

I do like them. I've found some of the Queen City knives weren't built as stoutly, some were. I had two that built up blade wobble during sharpening. Not something that happened with the regular line.

GEC's are even nicer IMO, but even more expensive.

They are worth it to me. Joe

I find the Queen D2 holds a working edge for a long time

I always reset the bevel of the edge, and work with a DMT Aligner
I start with E Course and work thru to E Fine

It is important to keep the edge good, and stropping brings it back and if need be a touch up with a DMT Extra Fine

It is much harder to get a razor edge on the D2
The GEC carbon sharpens to a much finer razor edge, and is easier to sharpen, but I do not find it holds a working edge as long as the Queen D2
