Edge holding test and a Bk14 or BK11 factory sheath

Ok i want to do a test of edge holding abilities of several knives and will be destroying (possibly) a factory becker sheath, and other things, in the process but i dont have an extra, is there any for sale anywhere or Does anyone have an extra factory sheath for a bk11 or bk14 that they would let go of for a reasonable price and take USPS money order?

I know it might seem wrong, i apologise, but i know these sheaths dull the edge. what better thing to use in a edge holding test? hard use knives i have seen go thru bricks, why not a sheath?

A few of the steels i will test are 1095, 5160, and sr101.

I never had an issue with the stock necker sheaths dulling a blade. (Just some retention issues.)
Others seem to have had some dulling issues though.

I'll be anxious to see the results of the testing WW.
What methods of testing will you be using? How will the data be collected and reviewed?

I'd like to see the results of this. I have a number of neckers from different makers and from my experiences, factory sheaths can be a nightmare on edges. lookin forward to your findings.

I have not had issues with them dulling from riding in the sheath and have been careful drawing them and re-sheathing them and have avoided dulling there but i have tested slicing the edge of one compared to a kydex sheath and the dulling was noticiably worse.

This wont really be just becker oriented as there will be several company knives involved. Even same steels, different comapanies, with different heat treats will be tested. I will be doing this with a friend who will also be testing some stainless steel knives as well but im not honestly sure which steels. The way we plan to test isnt going to be very professional or accurate to some but it will show US which works for us in which event and give us a good reason to drink some beer.

Basically the test with the bk14 sheath will be each knife is brought to a shaving sharp paper slicing edge and then we cut on the sheath, with direct applied pressure trying to cut throught it, might even baton on it a little, as we go we will test each knife to see which is holding there edge longer.

Ill be adding D2 to the test if i get a bk24 in time but i have knives further up on my list currently to order so its not set in stone. Should be fun, will take a couple weeks to get everything ready, well it will take a couple weeks before we are meeting up to test some steel anyway.

Thanks Again bsmith email sent!

Awesome man and a bk16 sheath would be great if you have an extra and dont mind that im going to dye it other than that i think im set man thanks again.

I did a simple test of this last night after watching a virtuovice youtube video where he does a similar thing, though neither of us did a destructive test.

After thinking about my (and virtuovice's) results a bit, I have a hypothesis I'd like to pursue.

In my case the dulling was immediate, and so was the repair via stropping. Bringing the edge back was so fast that I'm beginning to wonder if it was truly dull (it wouldn't cut anymore, literally wrinkling paper it had just sliced through), or if it's possible that the edge was perhaps undamaged but "coated" with material from the sheath.

It would be interesting if your testing could also test this hypothsis.

I have an extra stock sheath as well if you still need it. I'll give it to you.
This community rocks !

Have a BK24 coming next week. new to the forum joined just to chime in in a few places and maybe ask a few questions. will be checking the bk24 against its sheath when it arrives.

well opened the bk24 today didnt test it against the sheath but did a flesh and bone test on accident now have a bandaged middle left finger... first becker and first becker bite... on the plus side shaving sharp from the factory.

looking forward to this as i am looking into getting myself a few becker knives =D

it would be good for viewers / readers to know which sheaths of the bk14 / bk11 are gonna be talked about. coz i've been reading through old threads and it's saying the older sheaths have more glass materials in the sheath compared to the newer ones. even read a thread that mentions some people were getting newer sheaths that had the label "no glass" on the sheaths, as a replacement, to show that they were the newer stuff.

am new here at the becker part of the forums btw.

starting to be a lover of these knives even though i don't have one yet.

Hey just wanted to update, havent received the sheaths yet to perform the test but im no rush.

Also i should clarify this is not going to be a becker only test, and i have no intentions of making any videos or anything. me and a friend will be drinking beer and cutting stuff up over at his place to try and see which steel holds its edge better with our use. I have no problems coming in after we are done and mentioning some of my after thought on which performed which way but this isnt any type of official test and we wont be documenting anything. im sorry if some of you are getting the wrong idea. I normally have no problems with pics or videos as most of you know but the people i interact with are not always so keen to these type things. I can show the damaged sheath/s once i return to my home and share a few after thought but that would be about it, i apologize.

any kind of input will be extremely helpful! i know how some people can get quite passionate with certain things so i understand. =D

Finally tested against the new bk24 sheath and found that while it does dull mildly when rubbed derectly on the sheath on purpose it will still cut paper fairly well after5-7 passes against the sheath I got. not like it did just after receiving it but still very well. (better than my lmf2 when its freshly sharpened. something about blade geometry?)
