So i just cut up some cardboard it the heavy type for shipping
i made about 75 cuts in it and my knife still shaves arm hair just fine
is this good and what other types of cutting should i be doing

Rope is a good test medium, it dulls blades faster so you can tell the difference between blades sooner without making a bazillion cuts. If it's a larger rough use knife then chopping 2x4s is another good test medium.

I also take a batton to a small knife on a 2x4

I cut rope, cardboard, chop and split treated lumber, split and shave tree limbs and sticks and cut plastics. Oh, and don't forget cinder blocks. Just kidding.
