Edge patina?

Since I received my bk9 I've been couped up not using it to its potential for sure. The only use it seen is in the kitchen, I've spared you the pics of me batoning through red peppers and onions. Since doing that I've discovered blackish goldish spots on the edge, is this just the beginning of a patina?

Potatoes, Onions, Bells all eat up carbon blades, wash with soap and water, the wipe dry.

Keep your blade oiled with mineral oil or do what I do and get food grade lubricant for slicing machines.

I washed with warm water no soap and used mineral oil, did I mess up the edge? I thought discoloration was normal on carbon steel.

It is, no worries. Just make sure to take care or your blade the way did and you will always be happy with it!

Ok cool, willis tripped me out. What chu talkin bout willis?

Willis is a friend of mine. He is correct and so is everyone else, patina is a form of corrosion, only stabilized and "only skin deep". It will protect the steel under it, from anymore oxidation. The bad kind of rust, red and flaky is bad, but, if held in check with a protective agent, say mineral oil, the red rust turns black and grey and becomes a patina. See?

Any discoloration on the edge will come off when you sharpen. If you want a patina you need to strip the coating.

strop it on a scotch bright pad :)

get to cooking

wipe clean, oil.

off you go :)

Is scotch bright steel wool or rough sponge stuff?

that stuff.

it's actually tough enough that it will scratch and scour steel. yow.

some people have even removed steel with it... it's certainly a tough customer on delicate surfaces - too tough.

Scotch bright worked like a charm, Im impressed. I already had a few in my kit for scouring the ceramic filter on my msr. Weight/function ratio just doubled, not that a sponge is too heavy lol.
