So tonight I was trying to get a perfect mirror finish, the knife was a BM subrosa. After the 1k stone, I used a worn 6k tape and 1 micron diamond ompound followed by 1k tape then 3k and finally 6k tape. This is the best finish I've gotten so far,but it is still not perfect.

I need help figuring out what diamond pastes to use. Since the ep grits are proprietary, I'm not sure which order to use the tapes/compounds in. I figured I'd use the 6 micron compound after the 1k stone followed by the 3 then one then use the 1k tape then 3k tape then 6k. Does this sound right? It's pretty confusing!

After the stones, I use 2k, 4k, 10k, 15k tape that I can get locally, then finish with a piece of bare horsehide on a tape blank. The words 'mirror finish' are not strong enough... :D

I used to use more of the CrO2 on leather on a tape blank but since I found the polishing films I keep the compounds for my bench strops and larger blades.

Stitchawl, would you be willing to divulge your source of tapes, Sir?

HeiHeight, you have your progression out of whack a bit. The 1k tape should be close to about 3.5mic. grit. The 3k should be a little over 2mic., so you should use the 1mic diamond after those, and the 6k tape is a finisher. I can't remember for sure, but I think it's about 18k grit. You are right though, it can be confusing.

The 6mic grit is similar to the 600 grit EP, so I wouldn't use that at all, and especially not after the 1k EP, which again, is a little over 3mic

You have everything you need just in the EP stuff. I wouldn't use anything else for a while if I were you. You can skip the 1k tape too. If you go 1k EP stone, 3k tape 6k tape, you should be golden.

Sure, but it won't help you much unless you live in East Asia... :)
I buy them from regular HomeCenter shops. They all carry up to 10k, and some of the larger stores carry 15k. A package of four sheets about 6"x8" for the equivalent of roughly $9 USD.

The sheets are plastic backed, non-adhesive, so I stick 'em onto EdgePro tape blanks with ordinary white paper glue sticks. That stuff washes off the blanks with water so there are no bumps building up between changes of tape. I just cut the tapes to size, slap them on the blanks, and use them like strops, moving from spine to edge. I know in the US you can get the 3M plastic film up to 12k for sure... I saw it on the net a few months ago.

Thanks guys. I have 1 micron already, but its cheaper to buy the 3 all together.
